"Lake Mapourika is like a hidden gem in the Franz Josef Glaciers. This lake was formed about 14,000 years back when a large block of ice was left behind by the retreating Franz Josef Glacier. This lake is home to many birds, fish and seals. There is also a kiwi sanctuary here which has been successful in growing their population. This is a beautiful lake to kayak on which panoramic views of the Southern Alps. There is also a boat cruise that you can take and if you are lucky, you can get to see the elusive Rowi: New Zealand’s rarest Kiwi Bird."
