What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking beauty of the lupin fields, especially when combined with the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd and the stunning turquoise lake. The short blooming season means timing is crucial, and some visitors have been disappointed to miss the peak. Respect for the delicate flowers and nesting birds is a common theme in positive reviews.
"Great view of Lake Tekapo, Church of the Good Shepherd, and Collie Dog Memorial within walking distance.
Unfortunately, we missed the Lupins were not in bloom as it is winter now."

"What a beautiful spot! The flowers were slightly further over than we initially thought when looking for them, but it was worth the search. There was a great big patch of lupins to take photos in and admire the view. Beware of the oyster catchers nesting amongst the flowers as they get a bit upset when you're near their eggs. They soon settle down as you move further away though"
Naomi Halford
"Lupin fields though not as many.. you can see them in clusters here or there and in many areas along the main road leading in and out of Lake Tekapo. I understand the park blooms are in December though you can already see them in late Nov."

The Iconic Lupin Bloom
Visitors often find the most impressive lupin displays along the main road leading into and out of Lake Tekapo, as well as scattered throughout the fields surrounding the lake. The area near the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd is particularly popular, offering a postcard-perfect scene. It's important to remember that while the lupins are a beautiful sight, they are delicate. Travelers are advised to stick to paths and avoid trampling the flowers to preserve their beauty for others and the local ecosystem.
Beyond the visual spectacle, the lupin season also brings a unique awareness of the local wildlife. Oyster catchers, a native wading bird, often nest amongst the lupins, particularly near the lake. Visitors are urged to be mindful of these birds and their nests, giving them ample space and avoiding disturbance. This respect for nature is crucial for maintaining the pristine beauty of Lake Tekapo and ensuring a positive experience for both visitors and wildlife.
Capturing the Perfect Shot
When exploring for the best shots, consider the Church of the Good Shepherd as a classic foreground element. However, don't be afraid to venture slightly off the beaten path (while respecting the environment) to find unique compositions. Look for patterns, leading lines created by the lupin rows, and reflections in any puddles or the lake itself. Patience is key; sometimes waiting for a cloud to pass or for a bird to land can elevate your photograph from good to extraordinary.
For those looking to avoid crowds, visiting on a weekday or very early in the morning can make a significant difference. Many visitors also find success by driving along the roads leading out of Tekapo towards Twizel, where less-frequented patches of lupins can be found. Remember to always be aware of your surroundings, especially if parking on the roadside, and to respect any private property signs.
