Wow! That was a challenge!! Woke up at 6am and decided to do the the Mt Pirongia “grunter” loop plus up to the summit! 16km, 1265 vertical gain! Best group of ladies to climb with ⛰️ fell on my butt, got knee deep in mud, got rained on, saw amazing views, beautiful forest, rainbows, went for a skate, nearly twisted an ankle, climbed up steep rocks, held onto tree roots and chains for dear life 😂 a...

Reviews Summary

Mount Pirongia is a challenging but rewarding mountain hike, praised for its stunning summit views and immersive native forest. While the trails can be very muddy and the weather unpredictable, experienced hikers appreciate the adventurous terrain and the well-maintained Pahautea Hut. It's a must-do for those seeking a true wilderness experience in the Waikato region.

"Good as mountain to climb. Good huts up there as well. Tracks are well maintained by DOC and the views are beautiful

Weather can change quite fast so make sure you have all the gear"

Aaron Li

"Such an amazing tramp. Even though I went up on a horrible day in July (to the point where it was snowing at around 800m and above) the views were amazing. It's a very adventurous tramp, full of roots and points where you have to climb/abseil chains. Overall I highly recommend the walk, though only for more experienced/fit trampers. A must do if you're in the waikato region."

Hugo Strang

"Awesome tracks, some stairs in the beginning and became rough when reaching the top, we had to walk carefully over the rocks. The temperature was between 10 to 13.c, comfortable for this level of activity. Not too many people at 10am. The view was clear from the Ruapane lookout, almost 360 degrees. Our little boy was 4 years old and did very well. We finished with a picnic in the designated area. Parking is easily found and located at the start of the trails. Worth trying the hardest ones in few years time."
