Best Time for Views & Fewer Crowds

For stunning sunset vistas and a more peaceful experience, aim for late afternoon hikes. The Grampians Reserve offers incredible panoramic views of Nelson, making sunset a popular, yet manageable, time to visit. Be aware that some trails can get sunny with limited shade, so plan accordingly.

Trail Navigation & Footwear

While the Grampians Reserve boasts numerous trails, signage can be inconsistent. Hikers recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots due to steep and potentially slippery sections, especially on the Tawa loop and Grampians Walkway. Plan your route in advance to make the most of your visit.

These reach up to 390m high ⛰️ There is a myriad of tracks, with the main one leading to a TV/radio transmitter atop the hill. This is the one we hiked to 🥾🥾🥾 The hiking party consisted of my father, William (my stepmom's 16-year-old grandson) and I ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning panoramic views of Nelson and the Tasman Sea from Grampians Reserve, making it a popular spot for sunset. The network of trails offers great exercise, though some find the signage lacking and the paths steep and slippery, recommending sturdy footwear and route planning. Overall, it's a highly recommended natural escape close to the city.

"It is beautiful track and branched into several tracks and each track can easily take one hour. Track is gravel and zigzag going up when starting from fairfield house at Van Diemen Street.

It offers several views of Nelson town, Stoke, Tasman sea and also the hills.
Highly recommend to view sunset from top. There is enough time to get down to the bottom before its too dark."

Sadia Tahir

"Good walk for exercise, long steep start from the top of collingwood street, then levels off before a short steep climb to the tower. Good views from the top. Plenty of alternate tracks to different parts, exits/entrances."

Tony Grainger

"Such a good walk so close to the city! Beautiful views and plenty of tracks for varing experiences or fitnesses. The orange track is quite a steep start and maybe the longest of the tracks at an hour, but provides some of the best views of Nelson right from the beginning - better than from those at the viewing platform."
