"Ben shared the gorgeous Wanganui River with us today on The Bridge to Nowhere Tour. Fabulous trip and what a down to earth and professional tour company these guys are. Knowledgeable and super friendly. Impressive kiwi caring and sharing. You simply must take the drive and book in with this team. Thanks Ben , that was magic. :)"

"Our group of 12 canoed down the river staying at the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge on our second night. What a welcome respite from a drizzly day to have hot showers & comfy beds & a red wine while we shared our stories. Mandy & Joe were superb hosts & made us all very welcome. Love the beautiful view overlooking the river.
I would definitely recommend !!"

"We did the jet boat trip yesterday from Pipiriki to the Bridge to Nowhere and back. It was a fun and easy way to see a decent stretch of the river, and Murray our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and engaging, telling us interesting stories on our way up the river.

The Bridge to Nowhere was an easy, mostly flat 30 min walk. The bridge itself was wonderful to see, and the hot drink and biscuits were very welcome as it had rained on our way upstream.

The highlight was Murray's 'powerpoint' presentation of the sad story of the settlement and later abandonment of the Mangapurua Valley. All in all it was a wonderful way to spend the day from Whanganui, especially if you don't have the time to do the canoe trip down the river.

The Whanganui River Road has a few interesting stops on the way as well. We especially loved the Kawana Flour Mill."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Bridge to Nowhere

The Bridge to Nowhere is a historic concrete arch bridge built in 1936. It was intended to be part of a road connecting the San Gabriel Valley with Wrightwood, a project that was ultimately abandoned due to severe flooding in 1938 that washed out the access roads. The bridge stands as a solitary monument to this ambitious, unfinished endeavor, nestled deep within the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. Instagram

Its isolation is part of its allure. Hikers today traverse the rugged terrain, crossing the East Fork of the San Gabriel River multiple times, to reach this relic of a bygone era. The journey itself is as much a part of the experience as the destination, offering a true sense of wilderness exploration just a stone's throw from the bustling city of Los Angeles. Instagram+1

Over the years, the bridge has also become a popular spot for adventure sports, most notably bungee jumping. This adds another layer of excitement for visitors, transforming a challenging hike into an adrenaline-pumping day trip. Instagram

Navigating the Hike and River Crossings

The hike to the Bridge to Nowhere is a significant undertaking, typically spanning 10 to 11.5 miles roundtrip. The trail is characterized by its uneven terrain, requiring hikers to scramble over rocks and navigate through brush. Proper footwear, such as sturdy hiking boots, is essential for stability and protection. Instagram+1

A defining feature of this hike is the multiple river crossings over the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. The depth and strength of the current can vary significantly depending on recent rainfall and the season. Hikers should be prepared to get wet and consider bringing water shoes or sandals for easier crossing. Trekking poles can also be invaluable for maintaining balance. Instagram+1

Safety is paramount when attempting this hike. Always check weather conditions and river levels before you go. Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time. While the trail is popular, it's still a wilderness area, and preparedness is key to a successful and enjoyable experience. Reddit
