Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Routeburn Track's spectacular and diverse scenery, from lush forests to alpine lakes and majestic peaks. Many find it a moderately challenging but rewarding hike, ideal for experiencing New Zealand's natural beauty. However, some find it less 'epic' than expected if they have prior experience with similar landscapes, and the popularity can lead to crowded trails and social huts, detracting from solitude.

"We did the hike to Key Summit. It was a decent hike with some nice views at the top and along the way. I would rate it a moderate track up to the summit and lookout. It is a VERY busy trail, so try and get there as early as possible. They even bring tour buses of people to hike the trail. The views of Lake Marian are way off in the distance, so don’t expect them to be close up."

Jacqueline Zwack

"Spectacular!!! Medium difficulty hiking up. Rug up at the bottom, strip off along the way and rug up at the top as it was blowing a gale and freezing!! Just beautiful scenery 😍 The hike down was easy and fun 😃"

John Robertson

"Just my 2cents
The track is good for: folks not in the best shapes for more challenging hikes, family trip, who'd like to experience multi-day hikes, and those who enjoy socializing during hikes.
I personally didn't get the hype of epic scenery and the hike itself was a bit too easy. The huts get fairly social but what I'm after is solitude so it's actually a downside since everyday you're forced to stay in the hut or the campsite. Met some good people and a fair amount of not so friendly ones on the trail. The view was beautiful but maybe experienced with Patagonia and rainforest, I don't find any part of the hike much memorable. All in all, I'd recommend doing it as a day trip and think it's a great place for a family trip or a couple getaway, not for those who seek adrenaline rush or solitude"
