What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Lake Mangamahoe is celebrated for its breathtaking, iconic views of Mount Taranaki, especially when reflected in the lake. Visitors praise the versatile walking tracks and the extensive mountain biking park. While the scenery is consistently lauded, some note that the mountain's visibility is entirely weather-dependent, and shared trails require awareness of other users.
"Lake Mangamahoe, located just south of New Plymouth, is a truly scenic and versatile destination, highly regarded for its stunning views, recreational opportunities, and serene atmosphere.
Overall Impression:
Lake Mangamahoe is a picturesque man-made lake, created in 1932 as a water catchment area for New Plymouth. However, it has evolved into a popular recreational hub set within a working production forest. What truly sets it apart are the breathtaking, iconic views of Mount Taranaki framed by the lake and surrounding forest – widely considered one of the best viewpoints of the mountain in New Zealand. It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.
Key Highlights:
* Iconic Mount Taranaki Views: This is the undisputed star attraction. On a clear day, the reflection of the symmetrical cone of Mount Taranaki in the tranquil waters of the lake is absolutely stunning and a photographer's dream. There are specific lookout points, often with benches, designed for this view.
* Walking and Running Tracks: A popular 5.5km to 6km circuit walk around the lake is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. The loop offers varied scenery, including walking close to the lake edge, through regenerating native bush, and along an upper ridge that provides elevated views of the lake and surrounding farmland. There are also a couple of small swing bridges adding to the charm. The walk generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
* Mountain Biking Park: Adjacent to the lake, the Mangamahoe Mountain Bike Park is a major draw for cyclists. It boasts over 30km of well-maintained trails ranging from beginner-friendly green trails to advanced double-black lines. It's a fantastic facility with diverse terrain, including flowing singletrack, technical descents, and challenging climbs, all set within a lush forest environment. There are facilities like public toilets and a bike wash station.
* Horse Riding Trails: Dedicated bridle paths are available for horse riding, offering another way to explore the beautiful forest and lake surrounds.
* Picnic Spots: Numerous spots around the lake are perfect for a picnic, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the views.
* Accessibility: The main lake circuit walk is generally well-maintained and accessible. The mountain bike park has separate access points.
Things to Consider:
* Mount Taranaki Visibility: As with any view of the mountain, it's highly dependent on the weather. Clear skies are essential for that perfect reflection shot. If the mountain is shrouded in cloud, the lake is still beautiful, but you'll miss the iconic view.
* Multi-Use Trails: Some sections of the lake circuit are shared with mountain bikers and horses. While most users are considerate, it's important to be aware of your surroundings, especially on shared paths.
* Weather Conditions: The area can be muddy after rain, particularly on some of the unpaved sections of the walking tracks or mountain bike trails.
* Water Source: Lake Mangamahoe is a drinking water supply for New Plymouth. For this reason, activities like swimming, boating, and camping are prohibited in the immediate vicinity of the lake to maintain water quality.
Tips for Visitors:
* Check the Forecast: If seeing Mount Taranaki is a priority, check the mountain forecast before you go. Mornings are often best for clear views.
* Allow Time: While you can grab a quick photo at the main lookout, allow at least 1.5-2 hours to walk the lake circuit to truly appreciate the area. Mountain bikers could spend many hours exploring the dedicated park.
* Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, especially if you plan to explore beyond the main paved sections.
In summary, Lake Mangamahoe is a true gem in the New Plymouth area, offering some of the most spectacular views of Mount Taranaki and a fantastic range of outdoor activities. It's highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, walkers, runners, and especially mountain bikers."

"Lake Mangamahoe is a man-made dam and lake, created in 1932, which acts as a water catchment area for New Plymouth. Water from the nearby stream and the Waiwhakaiho River feeds the lake through a 548m pipe. To protect the steep hillside from eroding, development planting was undertaken, and shelterbelts were planted to protect the pine trees growing in what is now the Mangamahoe Forest.
There is a circuit walk that is enjoyable for all ages and abilities, but some of the routes veering off the circuit have steep undulating sections that require a reasonable standard of fitness."

"Lovely view! - to get a chance of seeing the Volcano with a nice reflection in the water, just follow the signs to the lookout and turn left on the last intersection (see picture)… both spots are absolutely worth it!"
