Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning 360° views from Mount Tauhara, calling it a brilliant and rewarding hike. The varied terrain, from open pastures to a shaded forest, adds to the adventure. While the climb is steep and the summit can be windy, most agree the effort is well worth the incredible scenery. Reddit+1

"A brilliant walk, first part is through some fields which is quite a steep hike and then you hit rain forest type terrain where you follow a well worn pathway up to the top. Take lots of water, snacks and make sure you have good gripped walking shoes if not you will fall. The ground is very uneven and slippery in places, some areas have been so well warn other pathways have been formed around them, I went through one which was possible but I had to turn sideways to make it through. The top is very windy near the big rocks to be careful. A great walk, it took me about 1.5 hours to get to the top and then you can pretty much jog back down because its easier than walking in some areas."

"Yes, I really loved the hike and the views. We started around 9:30 and we were back by noon. Take your time, but footing is good even though there's much climbing involved. Our twenty minutes on top was very windy. Great views. Highly recommend"

"Hiking is quite new for us. That’s why decided that Mount Tongariro in winter time would be too much for us. We did this one instead. We started a bit late 3PM though. We only walked 1 hour up and decided to go back because of sunset. We don’t know how far we got. Half way? Two third? We enjoyed an open point in the woods before heading back though. We could imagine there will be a lot of mosquito’s in summer time. The path is quite unequal and small and not constructed. Therefore it is harder to climb/walk, but not undoable if you are fit. A local brochure marked this walk as 4 out of 5. I think that’s fair. I loved the views and adventure."

The Hike Experience

The ascent of Mount Tauhara is a rewarding journey that begins with a steep climb through open pastureland. This initial section can be quite a workout, testing your stamina right from the start. As you progress, the trail transitions into a shaded, almost 'goblin forest' like environment, offering a cooler and more atmospheric experience. The path is well-worn but can be uneven and slippery in places, with numerous tree roots to navigate. InstagramReddit

Reaching the summit provides a spectacular payoff. The 360-degree views are truly breathtaking, encompassing the vast expanse of Lake Taupo and the surrounding volcanic plateau. On a clear day, you can see the majestic peaks of Tongariro National Park. The summit area is characterized by rocky outcrops, which serve as excellent vantage points but can also be very windy, so caution is advised. InstagramReddit

Many hikers describe the descent as easier than the climb, with some even opting for a steady jog down in certain sections. The entire round trip typically takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the summit views. It's a moderate hike that offers a significant sense of accomplishment and unparalleled scenery. InstagramReddit

Best Times to Visit for Optimal Experience

To truly appreciate the panoramic vistas from Mount Tauhara, visiting on a clear day is paramount. Overcast or foggy conditions can significantly obscure the stunning views of Lake Taupo and the distant mountains. Early morning hikes are popular for those seeking cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, allowing for a more serene experience. InstagramReddit

Late afternoons offer a different kind of magic, with the 'golden hour' light casting a warm glow over the landscape, creating beautiful photographic opportunities. However, be mindful of the time if you plan to hike in the late afternoon, ensuring you have ample daylight for the descent. Weekdays generally see fewer visitors than weekends, providing a more peaceful trek. InstagramReddit

While the hike is accessible year-round, winter can bring colder temperatures at higher elevations, and summer might see more mosquitoes in the forested sections. Regardless of the season, always check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for changing conditions. Reddit
