So…why so small? 🤔 Pygmy hippos are a different species from the common hippo. Instead of life in huge river herds, they live solo in the dense forests and swamps of West Africa. A smaller size makes it easier to move through thick vegetation and hi...

Visitors consistently praise Tiritiri Matangi Island as a 'gem' and a 'fantastic place' for experiencing New Zealand's native wildlife, particularly its rare birds. The island's conservation success and the accessibility of its wildlife are major draws, though some note the presence of feeders and gravel paths. An overnight stay is highly recommended for the best experience, especially for kiwi spotting.

"Fantastic place for rare/endangered bird watching/photography. Very active community conservation group doing a fantastic job of tours and management. But for purists be warned... There are feeders! Also a lot of people visiting and the paths are crunchy gravel. Next time I want to stay overnight for best chance at quiet observation"

"An amazing experience to see native wildlife and plant life up close and in their natural habitat (or as close as is possible). Great boat ride out to the island and fantastic walking tracks suitable for a range of fitness levels. Great signage along the tracks, very difficult to get lost, and handy time to walk guides. Very knowledgeable volunteers were present on both the wildlife and history. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors."

David Quinn

"What a gem in the heart of Auckland.
It is an amazing story as to what is being achieved in terms of retaining and improving our threatened series.
The ability to visit the island and see it first hand is a bonus.
Being close to Auckland makes it accessible and provides kiwis and tourists the opportunity to see so much first hand.
The variety and quantity of birds is amazing. The bird song is the first thing you realise when arriving on the island.
There are a number of walkways with feeding and water stations for the birds which enables you to sit and wait for the birds to come to you.
If you want to experience the morning bird song then stay the night and you will be blown away. Also at night you may be lucky enough to experience a Kiwi in its natural environment.
Definitely a must for bird lovers."
