What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Hump Ridge Track is highly praised for its luxurious comfort options, stunningly diverse scenery, and well-maintained paths. Visitors rave about the exceptional lodges, delicious meals, and friendly staff, making it a standout hiking experience. Some find certain sections muddy and challenging, and the cost of comfort packages can be high, but overall, it's considered a must-do in New Zealand.
"We did the guided hike, and never experienced such luxury on a hike.
The short helicopter ride to the start was a lot of fun and made the first day’s elevation gain much more pleasant. Second day nearly all downhill with views from snow capped peaks down to the ocean. Final day from the lodge at the amazingly historical Port Craig (wished I had more time to explore) along forrest and pristine beaches. Lodges with showers, beds, alcohol and amazing meals were great, together with super friendly and skilled staff and guides."

"I see why they made this a great walk.
1) Tor and tarns at the Okaka lodge summit
2) Epic restored viaducts
3) Lodge at beach with opportunity to swim with dolphins.
4) Coast to summit remote experience, with gorgeous views.
5) By far the most developed track I have ever seen. I’d estimate 90% of the incline track (perhaps 40+ km) is covered in boardwalk or steps, all in perfect condition.
6) Okaka lodge has heavenly accommodations. Quiet, great views, hot shower, self-cooked sausages for dinner and free porridge in the morning."

"What a great hike! Yes, challenging at times but we booked the comfort package with private room, hot showers, dinner and breakfast supplied at the hut. Plus we got our bags flown up to the first hut. Amazing variety of scenery, only two slightly boring hours on the second day on the last stretch to the hut. The huts have those little special extras with couches & chairs in front of the fire. You can also buy a wine, beer or other drinks there plus they have dehy food and snacks for sale, too. The hut wardens were super friendly and relaxed. There are muddy sections on the track so take your gaiters. Sandfly repellent is also a must, although they weren’t bad when we were there."

The Hump Ridge Track Experience: Comfort vs. Self-Guided
Conversely, the self-guided option allows for more flexibility and a potentially lower cost, though it requires carrying all your own gear, food, and sleeping arrangements. While the track itself is well-maintained, with extensive boardwalks and steps on inclines, self-guided hikers must be prepared for all weather conditions and the possibility of muddy sections. Reddit discussions highlight that even with the comfort package, some sections can be challenging, emphasizing the need for good preparation regardless of your chosen style.
Ultimately, the choice depends on your budget and desired level of comfort. Both options provide access to the track's incredible biodiversity, from lush forests to dramatic coastal views and the iconic historic railway viaducts.
A Glimpse into History: Port Craig and the Railway Viaducts
Exploring Port Craig allows visitors to step back in time. The lodges here are situated within this historical context, and some reviews mention wishing for more time to explore the area. The contrast between the rugged natural beauty and the man-made historical artifacts creates a compelling atmosphere. It's a chance to connect with the stories of those who worked and lived in this remote corner of New Zealand.
Navigating the Terrain: What to Expect on the Track
Beyond the constructed paths, you'll encounter icy streams and glacial plains, requiring careful footing. The track also traverses pristine beaches and dense fern forests, offering a rich sensory experience. The elevation changes can be significant, with steep ascents and descents, contributing to the hike's moderate grading.
Weather on the South Coast of New Zealand can be unpredictable. Be prepared for rapid changes, from sunshine to rain and wind. Packing layers, waterproofs, and appropriate footwear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek.
