What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise St. Mary's Church Upokongaro for its beautiful historic architecture, particularly its stunning stained glass windows and interior wood paneling. The well-maintained gardens, especially vibrant in spring, add to its picturesque charm. While some note the end of an era with the last wedding held there, the church remains a beloved and active community site.
"Spring time at St Mary’s Upokongaro: an absolute treat. Lovey flowers in bloom, a mature garden surrounding the church and the all the paint and gear you’d need to repaint close by, evidence the building is still well loved and looked after. Nestled in next to a little primary school, not far from Whanganui proper. It’s easy to imagine why you’d try to make a small settlement here next to the Whanganui river. It’s picturesque."
