What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning, humbling coastal scenery and the unique experience of walking on the beach at low tide. The dramatic white cliffs and layered rock formations are consistently praised. However, the very limited parking and the absolute necessity of checking tide times are common points of caution.
"We started the walkway on the bridge where there is not much space for cars and continued up the hill. The beginning of the way was steep but easy going with nice views. After the highest point there are steps up to a bridge to the next walk. From the bridge to the beach was the way muddy with a little stream crossing so be prepared for it. We came to the beach at low tide so it was super easy to walk through even though half of the beach way was covered with big stones."

"Great walk with excellent views, a reasonable fitness is required for the up and downs and walking on loose gravel in areas"

"Driving up the coast is so beautiful. We loved making stops and this was the first of many for this day. The White cliffs and the ocean meet with such power from the waves. The walk was very easy but the tide was high so we could not make it down to the beach. Well worth stretching your legs."

Understanding the Tides
When the tide is out, the walkway transforms. What might be submerged or inaccessible becomes a pathway to explore the rocky beach. This allows for a more comprehensive experience, including reaching the charming little cave and appreciating the full scale of the white cliffs. Planning your visit around the low tide window ensures you can make the most of this unique natural attraction.
Navigating the Terrain
Be aware that sections of the path, especially leading to the beach, can become muddy, and you might encounter small stream crossings. The beach itself is covered in large stones, which can make walking challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended to comfortably navigate the ups and downs and the uneven surfaces.
Wildlife Encounters
These rare and endangered dolphins are a significant part of New Zealand's marine biodiversity. Spotting them would be an unforgettable addition to your visit. Remember to observe any wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing them.
