Reviews Summary

Visitors find Takiroa Rock Art a convenient roadside stop with interesting Maori drawings and pleasant birdlife. While some note the art's recent age and simple patterns, the site's preservation efforts and natural setting are appreciated. The fencing, though necessary, is a point of discussion for some.

"I was very excited to see Maori rock drawings, expecting to witness an important cultural heritage. In fact you see some rounded lines and simple patterns which are not older than 200 years, very primitive compared to the heritage of stone age cultures in Europe or Turkey. And according to the explanation boards yet no-one knows why this red colour was used. Caught between funny and weird."

Susan Kalla

"We were on a road trip and heading towards Aomaru on highway 83 and spotted the Brown Tourist Attraction signs for Maori Rock Art. Took us awhile to turn around safely to visit this historical sight. The information regarding when and how these Rock paintings were created is interesting."

Annie Hackett

"Great Place of recognition but too bad a lot of people took it upon themselves to tag the rock with their names. Couldn't really see a lot and some were removed for preservation.
Fences infront of drawings (rightfully so) and to make sure you're safe from any rock fell.
Quick stop on the drive"

It's Jess!

Unlike prehistoric art, the drawings here are estimated to be less than 200 years old and feature relatively simple patterns and rounded lines, primarily in red pigment. The exact reasons behind the use of this specific color and the purpose of these drawings remain a subject of mystery, adding an intriguing layer to the site's appeal. Reddit

Visitors should approach the art with an understanding of its unique context. While some may find the art 'primitive' compared to older global examples, its cultural significance as a more recent expression of Maori heritage is undeniable. The site offers a valuable opportunity to connect with a specific period of New Zealand's indigenous history and artistic traditions. Reddit

Preservation and Visitor Experience

To ensure the longevity of the Takiroa Rock Art, protective fencing has been installed. This measure serves a dual purpose: safeguarding visitors from the risk of falling rocks from the cliff face and protecting the delicate artwork from accidental damage or vandalism. While this fencing might slightly alter the viewing experience, it is crucial for the site's preservation. Reddit

Despite the presence of fences, visitors can still appreciate the artwork. Some reviews mention that certain areas might have been modified for preservation, and unfortunately, some modern tags have appeared over time. The site also aims to protect the art from further harm, which is why the fencing is necessary. Reddit The natural environment also contributes to the experience, with many visitors noting the pleasant sounds of nesting birds along the cliff face, adding a natural soundtrack to the historical site.
