What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Glenbrook Vintage Railway for its authentic vintage feel and the charm of its restored steam trains and classic carriages, offering a delightful step back in time. The Christmas Lights Train and 'Day Out With Thomas' are highlighted as particularly magical experiences for families. While the train ride is short, the overall nostalgic atmosphere is highly appreciated. Some guests found the high tea experience to be underwhelming and noted a lack of certain advertised amenities like soft drinks.
"Authentic vintage feel. Retro train cars and historic steam train. I went with the first class experience. Initially I thought only first class had a viewing deck due to the pictures and desperations on the website which was one of the main reasons I chose first class, but turns out the standard cars also have plenty of viewing spots. The high tea was a bit underwhelming as I found most of the savoury stuff to be dry and flavourless. The website also stated that there would be tea and coffee and cold non- alcoholic drinks like soft drinks available, which was the second main reason I chose first class as I thought it would be great with cold soft drinks, but low and behold, when I asked about soft drinks, the attending staff member informed that they didn’t have that on the train. I felt misinformed and quite cheated but the car for first class was at least pretty neat. And the staff was nice as well. Ride was pretty short, and not the most scenic but still a good experience."

"A fun outing for young and old. We have been to GVR many times over the years, but signed up for the high tea experience for King's Birthday Weekend and had a blast.
A fun outing on an old steam drawn train in the first class carriage with high tea. It's a short run from Glenbrook station to Waiuku with time to enjoy the snacks and tea or coffee on the trip there and back. About an hour all up and well worth the drive to get there."

"We kicked off the New Year with the Glenbrook First Class Steam Train Experience, and it was a fantastic family outing! Opting for an early morning ride, we enjoyed a moderate crowd and well-prepared staff, making for a smooth and relaxed trip.
Having read mixed reviews about the Christmas night show, I can see how things might get chaotic—the platform is quite small, so visiting during a less busy time is definitely the way to go. In the summer, first-class seating offers welcome shade, making it a more comfortable choice.
The experience includes high tea, but don’t set your expectations too high—it’s more of a casual spread, likely sourced from a local supermarket bakery, so while it’s nicely presented, it’s nothing to rave about.
That said, the train ride itself is a delight, especially for kids! The restored first-class carriage is a treat, featuring comfortable vintage seating and large windows, perfect for soaking in the scenic views. Just be sure to make a bathroom stop beforehand, as there are no onboard facilities.
The beautifully restored vintage trains, classic station platform, and charmingly dressed conductors add a wonderful touch of nostalgia, making the whole experience feel like a step back in time.
Highly recommend booking online to secure your preferred time, especially during peak periods. While it may not be a place you visit repeatedly, it's absolutely worth checking out for a unique and memorable day out!"
