"One of the three important historical landmarks in Whakatane. This rock as associated cave was very significant for local Maori before it was partially demolished by early settlers. After WW1 it was made into a war memorial and for a long time there was a waka on a plinth at the base of the rock. The Maori history of this landmark is now much better advertised. There are benches by the arch-way, which is all that remains of the cave, and a memorial rest area on the other side of the rock."
