Te Reo Hotuhotu Reo Mokemoke aa Raukatauri The beautiful voice of this magnificent Pūtorino from our Tupuna singing once again. This one was collected by the Whanganui Regional Musem in the late 1800s and was probably the last time its voice was ever heard. Although the bindings had come loose over the 120 years or so of storage we were able to hold fast together, binding with my hands so that ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors generally praise the Whanganui Regional Museum for its rich collection of regional and Māori history, noting its manageable size and donation-based entry. While some express disappointment over the removal of certain historical displays, the overall sentiment highlights friendly staff and engaging exhibits, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in local heritage.

"A fab museum, runs off donations (free entry). Not huge but the perfect size for an hour or two of exploring. Nice that it has the regional history rather than just repeating the national history. Friendly lady welcomed us and explained what was included in each exhibit and where to find the toilets!

There was also a toy/game station to amuse children near the entrance and a couple of other games/activities around the upstairs exhibits too."

"Very interesting Museum, with lots to learn about Māori and their history. You should plan enough time or visit on two different days, to have enough time to look at everything. The ladies from the reception were also very lovely and helpful. Totally recommend to come and visit when you’re in the area."

Swantje Voß

"Really disappointing. So many of the items kept in the museum are gone.
The lovely old Victoria Ave walk at the turn of the century was so special as a memory of such a historical town.... I was so looking forward to sharing with my children, but it has all been taken away.
Perhaps if all the pictures were moved to the new Art Gallery, it may have made room for the historical items that are locked away from the public.
(nice to see the sunfish has remained)."
