Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise St Paul's Rock for its spectacular 360-degree views, which are considered a massive payoff for a short, albeit steep, climb. Many highlight the unique experience of ascending the volcanic plug, especially with the aid of chains. While the path can be challenging, particularly when wet, the overall consensus is that it's a highly worthwhile detour for its stunning scenery and sense of accomplishment.

"Best effort to view payoff. It was a relatively easy climb, took me 15 min. It was during the Waitangi day long weekend (Feb 2025). I met a group of people at the top and passed by a couple of solo climbers on the way down. The view was incredible, especially for such a short hike. You can drive up right to the trailhead (I thought we couldn’t so I had my friends drop me off at the bottom of the main road and had to walk up).

It’s steep at some points and the final climb needs the help of chains as it was pretty much vertical. Just take it slow and it’ll be fine. One of the best climbs I did in NZ (and I did Roys Peak). Super worth it.

I went at around 1PM so it was scorching hot. Stopped by from Mangonui after having lunch at a fish n chips place."

"This hike looks intimidating, but my wife who is a brain-surgery survivor did well. If you're not obsessed or over 70 years old, you can do this and you won't regret it."

"This place is so nice!! It’s one of the highest points around and you get a good 360 view of the entire area!! And I didn’t see a single soul during my entire time around there. Truly an otherworldly experience!!
Do note that the path becomes very steep by the end and that it mostly is grass/mud and stones. So don’t go if it’s raining as you’ll be slipping down before you get up. And if you feel unsure about whether you can do the climb, I recommend staying safe and only going halfway, where you still get rewarded by wonderful views. The road up to the starting point is quite steep and one way, so be careful while driving. But definitely go here, I would even go so far as to recommend going here even if it’s a detour from your original route. Simply superb!"
