What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ohiwa Harbour Lookout offers beautiful coastal views, particularly on sunny days with vibrant blue skies and seas, and a notable sight of Whakaari/White Island. However, some visitors find the view partially obstructed by tree growth, and parking is limited. Nearby lookouts are recommended for those seeking more expansive, unobstructed panoramas.
"tl;dr - don't bother.
As you come down the hill and can see the ocean stretching out along the coast you'd be forgiven for thinking that this lookout has awesome views but the growth of the trees in front of the platform blocks most of the good view. There's a bin and space to park a few cars.
If you want really good views of the coast stretching away into the distance then check out the scenic lookout just up the hill on Otarawairere rd (not Kapu Te Rangi, though that has cool views too)."

"It's so beautiful up here, on the top of the hill, looking around the district. Looking out towards the East Cape, then over past Putauaki, and to, and Tarawera. Looking out over Coastlands, to Matata and towards Tauranga Moana. It is just so glorious. Happiness is the top of a tall hill on a sunny day. I love bringing visitors here."

"Such a beautiful place to go. Every time I go there I can't believe how blue the sea and the sky are.
Definitely a must see."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
However, parents should be mindful of the limited parking and the potential for tree obstruction affecting the view. It's also important to supervise children closely on the viewing platform and around the lookout area, as there may be uneven terrain. Consider combining this visit with a picnic at a nearby park or beach for a more complete family outing.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
The primary challenge for photographers is the potential for tree growth to obscure the view, which might require creative framing or patience to find clear sightlines. The small car park also means arriving early or late might be necessary to secure a good spot without feeling rushed. Despite these limitations, the sheer beauty of the natural landscape can still yield stunning photographic opportunities for those willing to explore different angles.

Navigating the Views: What to Expect
However, it's important to manage expectations regarding the view. Some visitors have noted that the growth of trees in front of the viewing platform can obstruct parts of the scenery. This means the 'good view' might not always be as clear as anticipated. Despite this, the overall sentiment from those who appreciate the lookout is one of beauty and a sense of happiness derived from being on a tall hill on a sunny day.
For those seeking unobstructed, sweeping coastal views, it's worth noting that alternative scenic lookouts are available just up the hill on Otarawairere Road, and Kapu Te Rangi also offers impressive perspectives. These nearby spots are recommended for those who find the main lookout's view compromised by foliage.
Practicalities: Parking and Access
The lookout itself features a viewing platform designed to offer the best possible vantage point. While the platform provides a designated area to enjoy the scenery, the accessibility of the path leading to it might vary. It's generally considered accessible, but the surrounding terrain could be uneven, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
Given the limited facilities (primarily a bin), it's recommended to come prepared. Bringing your own refreshments and ensuring you take any rubbish with you will help maintain the natural beauty of the location. The simplicity of the site means the focus remains squarely on the natural landscape.
