What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Flor Wildlife Refuge offers a unique opportunity to witness Olive Ridley turtles nesting, a truly awe-inspiring natural event. Visitors praise the pristine beach and the dedication of the conservationists. However, many are deeply saddened and disturbed by the prevalent issue of turtle egg poaching, which occurs even in the presence of rangers, creating a complex and emotionally challenging experience for some.
"La Flor Tortuga Sanctuary, Nicaragua
This place has a big, huge problem. It should be a sanctuary and sometimes they collect eggs, hatch them and release baby turtles in the see. However, our experience was different and extremely sad.
At 9pm, as agreed, the sanctuary guide came for waking us to the nesting beach. At first we were surprised, since together with the guide there was also a ranger, in camouflage dress, wearing a buff on his face, and carrying a gun.
Once we reached the beach, there were at least 50 locals, spotting the waves with flash lights waiting for the turtles. We then realized all those people were egg poachers!!!
In 1h we saw 4 turtles: once they arrived on the beach, the poachers followed them, sometimes even grabbing them and bringing them to the soft sand. Then they waited for the turtle to make the hole in the sand, even showing me when they lay their eggs, then they collected the eggs and brought them away. All in front of the ranger!!!
At first we were speechless. Then I started asking tons of questions to the guide. My Spanish is not fluent, and the guide didn’t speak English. He was clearly embarrassed, however, what he told me do not give justice to what happened in a place that should be a sanctuary!
What’s happening? An “authorized poaching. The guide confirmed it’s illegal.
Why? Locals (the poachers) are poor people who earn good money selling the eggs. They think turtle eggs are a good source of protein, and an aphrodisiac as well. NO COMMENT!!!
The ranger? In order to keep the sanctuary up and running, they want to avoid conflicts with the local communities. SERIOUSLY?
It has been my saddest experience in 2 years overlanding Northern and Central America.
Astonishment, sadness, rage, powerless are our feelings. What we could or can do? I made some research and found organizations like Paso Pacifico and Wild Aid are actively involved in combating turtle egg poaching in Nicaragua. Let’s support them!"

"Beautiful place even though I didn’t see any baby turtles being hatched from eggs and released because was not in the right season.
If you are in the area of San Juan del Sur, I highly recommend to visit!"

"Following guide books and local advice, we went here one evening hoping to see turtles on the beach. We were welcomed with a frosty, if not hostile, reception by the rangers and told to return to San Juan del Sur.
Such a missed opportunity to show what a rich wildlife there is in Nicaragua and receive donations for a good cause"

For low-light conditions, use a high ISO, a wide aperture (low f-number), and a fast shutter speed if possible. A tripod can be very helpful.
