What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This market is a massive, bustling hub offering incredible bargains and a unique cultural experience. While it can be crowded, hot, and dirty in places, the sheer variety of goods and the opportunity to haggle make it a must-visit for many. Be prepared for sensory overload and potential challenges, but embrace the chaos for a truly memorable adventure.
"Good bargains, but you need to understand what you this is, it is beyond busy, with lots of people and very little space to move freely on foot, so leave any vehicles outside the area. Definitely a cultural experience with an amazing opportunity to see what I believe is the hub for many vendors from all over to get their wares to sell. I was there just before Christmas so many individuals appeared to also be preparing for the holidays. Incredible people watching and bargains, just go with a lot of patience, time and an open mind. Lots of people squishing, be mindful of that."

"Brief summary:
Huge market (the biggest of Central America), You can find anything you need in this place, the lowest prices for all kind of items, you can burglar to get a even lower price if you want. It's a maze, you can get lose in here if it's your first time, it's good to have a local guide so he/she can help you to travel across the market. Also, if you go with a local is much better because they know where are all the "depsrtaments" located.
WARNING: This is a crowded, dirty and hot place, be carefull while visiting it. Do not expect to see first-world hygiene when it comes down to the manipulation of food and meat. Don't buy alive animals in this market! Much of the parrots, squirrels, turtles, iguanas, lizards and other kind of especies are protected by CITES, so it is ilegal and you will be supporting the extraction of those animals, and furthemore the destruction of the environment."

"I grew up going to this market and if you know where to go and who to do business with you can definitely find some great treasures and deals here. Afterall, this is the biggest city market in the entire Central American region.
However, do keep in mind that because this is an open market, if you don't know your way around it can be quite overwhelming and hard to figure out. Not only that but it can be dirty in some areas and more importantly, dangerous too. Theft is not uncommon, but that's common knowledge.
Be sure to wear casual clothing and don't come showing off expensive accessories and you should be fine."
