What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Deichman Bjørvika Library, praising its stunning modern architecture and its role as a vibrant community hub. Many highlight the free entry, diverse facilities beyond books, and family-friendly atmosphere. While generally positive, some note that popular areas can get crowded during peak times.
"For bibliophiles and architecture buffs, this is a must stop. This library opened in 2020 after an international competition to find its architect. The Multi-story building is modern, whimsical and open with endless written, audio and visual offerings. There are many places sit and read. Children are welcomed here and there were many when we visited. It is on the waterfront next to the Opera House and very close to Oslo Central Station so if you have a couple of hours to spare, store your luggage at Central Station like we did and stop in to this beautiful space."
Chrisoula Kiriazis, MD
"Top — laconic in form, rich in experience. The building embraces minimalism in structure and materials, but complexity in spatial function.
Structure: A dramatic cantilevered upper floor (over 18 meters long) provides shade and a bold visual identity, while maximizing interior flexibility.
Noise zones range from silent study areas to vibrant social and workshop spaces.
Materials: Glass, concrete, and steel are used sparingly and efficiently to convey openness and durability.
Collection: Over 450,000 books and media
Function: Library, cinema, auditorium, maker spaces, reading rooms, co-working, podcast studios.
'A Laconic and Smart Public Library for the Future' - the main branch of Oslo’s public library system, is more than just a place to borrow books. It was envisioned as a multifunctional, inclusive cultural hub."
Iryna Kabanchuk
"I almost never review "attractions" but this is also just a library you can chill, read books, or play chess in. For free! Plenty of cozy spaces to hide from gawking tourists like me. And the architecture is of course iconic."
