Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Fisheries Museum Alesund for its authentic, immersive atmosphere and historical displays of fishing technology. However, some find the strong, musty smells overwhelming and note that many exhibits are primarily in Norwegian, limiting accessibility for non-speakers. The admission price is also a point of consideration for some.

"Nice Museum which describes pretty well how the fishing technology and culture developed over the centuries. A lot of equipment and machines are on display. The location is the old fishing factory - the smell and the apearance are like back in the days...
Also some old ships are on display. Nice."

Gunnar Maiberg

"I had a bad allergy (to mold) flare-up after visiting here. The MUSTY smell was OVER-WELMING and everywhere in the main 3-story museum. All the exhibits were VERY old, and most of the exhibits on the 2nd and 3rd floors were in Norwegian, not English. We also thought the museum was expensive. We only saw 2 other couples there. I wish we never went."

Laura Andrews

"Great history of the fishing industry in Norway. Also a section on the "pilots" the people were are trained to guide ALL the ships into port."

Jeff Newcomb

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Fisheries Museum Alesund offers a unique glimpse into maritime history, but it might be a mixed bag for families with young children. While the old ships and machinery could spark curiosity, the museum's strong emphasis on historical accuracy includes authentic, potent smells from its past as a fish processing factory, which can be overwhelming for sensitive noses. Reddit

Furthermore, the majority of detailed exhibit information is in Norwegian, which could limit engagement for children. Families might find more enjoyment in the visual aspects of the exhibits and the scenic harbor location. Consider it a destination for older children or those with a particular interest in maritime history and sensory experiences. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

If you're looking for extensive interactive exhibits or comprehensive English information, you might want to compare this with other attractions in Alesund. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Sensory Experience: Smells and Atmosphere

The Fisheries Museum Alesund is not just a visual experience; it's a full sensory immersion. Housed in the Holmbua warehouse from 1861, the building itself is a historical artifact. Visitors often remark on the authentic smells of fish processing, a testament to the building's past life. This unique atmosphere is a key part of what makes the museum memorable, transporting you directly into the era it represents. While some find these smells overwhelming, others appreciate them as a genuine connection to the history of Norwegian fisheries. Reddit

Beyond the aromas, the museum's appearance is designed to evoke the past. The old equipment and machines on display, along with exhibits on fishing vessels, paint a vivid picture of the industry's evolution. The location by the beautiful harbor in Alesund further enhances the experience, offering picturesque views that complement the historical exhibits. TikTok

Navigating Language Barriers and Exhibit Content

A significant point of feedback regarding the Fisheries Museum Alesund concerns the language of its exhibits. While the museum aims to educate visitors about the rich history of Norwegian fisheries, a common observation is that exhibits on the second and third floors are primarily in Norwegian. Only the first floor is consistently translated into English. This can be a considerable drawback for international tourists who are not fluent in the language, limiting their ability to fully engage with the historical narratives and detailed information presented. Reddit

This linguistic divide means that a substantial portion of the museum's content might be inaccessible to a large segment of its visitors. Travelers seeking a comprehensive understanding of the fishing industry's development, from early methods to modern vessels and processing techniques, may find their experience curtailed. It's advisable for non-Norwegian speakers to be aware of this limitation and perhaps focus on the visually engaging aspects or seek out any available translated materials. Reddit
