What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mannen offers breathtaking panoramic views that are consistently praised by visitors. Hikers appreciate the challenging yet rewarding nature of the trail and the stunning scenery. However, some find the trail rugged and potentially muddy, emphasizing the need for proper gear and caution, especially in wet conditions.
"Great hike with amazing views! Moderate difficulty, but it can get muddy in bad weather as the paths are on bare earth. It takes 45 minutes to climb without breaks at a fast pace. If you do the circular route, you can add another 2 hours. Definitely recommended in good weather!"

"This hike is challenging because of elevation that you need to overcome. At the same time, the trail is nicely marked and you just follow it.
Bring both a waterproof hard shell and some layer against cold, as it's pretty windy on the top, and the weather changes quite a lot.
Views are beautiful and you can see a football playground and a beach in the valley.
The parking lot where you leave you car is paid so just count with that."

"We visited this trail recently and noticed that there were no signs indicating where the hike begins. We parked at Haukland beach, which had plenty of parking and amenities.
To reach the top viewpoint, take the right-hand gate just to the right of the tunnel (marked in red in my photo). If you prefer a flatter route around the area, take the left-hand gate instead — though we didn’t try that one ourselves.
The difficulty really depends on your hiking experience. I’m not a frequent hiker and I’m used to Switzerland’s well-marked trails, which are usually equipped with ropes or rails for support. This hike was had no markings, no safety features. From a technical perspective, I’d rate it as moderate to hard, though physically it wasn’t demanding. It took us about 45 minutes to go up (not sure if we reached the very top, but we were high enough to see both beaches and the lake) and 45 minutes to come down, with two more technical, rocky sections.
This may be considered an easy or standard trail in Lofoten, but just be aware it’s quite rugged, expect rocky paths, some mud, and no trail infrastructure. If you’re used to mountain hiking and wear proper hiking shoes, it should be manageable. My husband, who is more experienced with mountain trails, found it easy.
That said, the views from the top are really nice!!"

Understanding the Mannen Trail
There are two main routes: a direct ascent to the summit and a longer circular route. The direct path is steeper and more challenging but quicker. The circular route offers a more varied experience, taking you around the area for approximately two extra hours. The trail is marked, but it lacks the extensive safety infrastructure like ropes or rails found on some European mountain trails, emphasizing the need for caution and self-reliance.
Key Takeaways for the Trail:
* Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable.
* Terrain: Expect steep, rocky, and potentially muddy paths.
* Markings: Trails are marked but can be rugged; stay aware.
* Routes: Choose between a direct ascent or a longer circular hike.
