What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Hovedøya Monastery Ruins for its historical significance and the island's natural beauty, offering a peaceful escape from Oslo. The free access and scenic ferry ride are highlights, though some note the ruins themselves are a brief visit. The island's beaches and cafe add to its appeal as a relaxing day trip destination.
"This property features the ruins of an old monastery. It is free to explore without admission. It is about 95% open-air with only one small corner shelter with a restored roof. The footprint of the entire, original complex appears to be fully intact. Fun to explore, but only enough sights to last about ten minutes. Not a major destination attraction on its own, but definitely the crown jewel if walking around this tiny island."
Troy Windhorst
"Beautiful Abbey Ruins. Norway does not have very many places of historical significance that are made of stone. So it is nice to see something from the past that was stone built.
On a hot summer's day, it is a perfect place to spend a few hours on this paradise island. And the ruins here just make it even more interesting.
They are right by the cafe, so if you are having lunch there, you should definitely explore the ruins afterwards. You will pass through them on your way to the beach, so why not look around?"
Barbara ELSE
"Enchanting ruins with info on how the structures used to look. This is just the ruins and during the off-season it appears the cafe is closed so plan accordingly. The ruins are fascinating to explore and well worth the public ferry ride from the barge if you’re into history."
