What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently rave about the absolutely stunning, unparalleled views on the Romsdalseggen Ridge hike, calling it one of the best hikes they've ever done. The challenging nature and dramatic ridge walk are major draws. However, some find certain sections treacherous, especially in poor weather, and the descent can be tough on the knees.
"Did the hike last week of September 2025.
There was only 1 bus (9am) that run (almost end of the season). I was very glad to see many people taking the bus as i was worried abt snow and unsure if the hike can be done.
After walking ~2.5km of gradual ascent, abt 1.5hr into the hike, there was snow as I climb up the first steep wall of rocks)… on all fours. It’s a bit scary with all the snow and some ice. I am glad for all the hikers that went ahead and led the way! I followed their footsteps.
I had clear sky and nice sunny weather!
After the restaurant, it was a steep descent. About 3/4 of the descent had “steps”, and that was very helpful, though still intense in th knees.
(Turns out, quite a people did the hike from Åndalsnes town centre, past the restaurant and kept going to the top and returned the way same. This had much lesser snow. Though I read that during busy time, the hike is done one way, from the bus drop off and back to Åndalsnes as some parts on the ridge are narrow)"

"Absolutely stunning Norway hike on ridge, not to be missed on a sunny day. The ridge portion is challenging but rest, less so. Completed to the cable car in ~4 hours, but decided to save the $30 and hike the rest of the way (added another hour). In retrospect, would have preferred to take the cable car as it was very muddy, crowded and too many slippery tree roots. I am sure it make take 8 hours if you go slow and stop a lot, but if you have basic fitness, you can do it much shorter time (there was no rush and we stopped for a 20 minute lunch). Just a great day-- go!"

"May be one of the best hikes we have done. Highly recommend taking the bus to the trail head and hiking back to the car in Andalsnes. The bus was labeled Romsdalseggen at the station and was an easy 20 minute ride. Also took the lift down for the last segment to save the knees. Too early in the vacation to be suffering!"

Navigating the Ridge: Safety First
Weather plays a significant role in the safety of this hike. On a clear, sunny day, the ridge is manageable for experienced hikers. However, fog, rain, or snow can make the rocks slippery and obscure the path, turning a challenging hike into a dangerous one. Several reviewers mention encountering snow and ice even in late September, making the ascent and descent treacherous. Always check the weather forecast immediately before your hike and be prepared to turn back if conditions are unfavorable. Proper footwear with excellent grip is non-negotiable.
Community advice strongly suggests planning your transport in advance. The Romsdalseggen bus is a popular option for the one-way hike from Venjedalen to Åndalsnes. This avoids the need to arrange a car shuttle. For the descent, many opt to use the Romsdalsgondolen cable car from Nesaksla to save their knees, especially after a long day on the trail. This combination of careful planning, respecting the trail's difficulty, and being prepared for the elements will ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience on this magnificent Norwegian ridge.
The Romsdalsgondolen: A Scenic Shortcut
The gondola ride itself is an experience, offering ever-expanding views as you ascend. At the top, you can explore the Nesaksla viewpoint and the famous Rampestreken viewpoint, a cantilevered platform that juts out over the valley, offering a thrilling perspective and incredible photo opportunities. Many hikers use the gondola to descend from the Romsdalseggen Ridge, which can significantly reduce the strain on your knees, especially on the steep downhill sections. While it comes with a cost, many find it a worthwhile investment for the convenience and the spectacular, easily accessible scenery.
Best Views and Photo Opportunities
Beyond the ridge, the Rampestreken viewpoint on Nesaksla mountain is a must-visit for photographers. This cantilevered platform offers a unique and exhilarating perspective, making for dramatic shots that capture the vastness of the landscape. The Romsdalsgondolen provides easy access to this area, making it accessible to a wider range of visitors. For the best photographic results, aim for clear weather to maximize visibility and vibrant colors. Early morning or late afternoon light can add depth and drama to your photos, but safety on the ridge always takes precedence over the perfect shot.
