The whole area is full of old houses and alleyways. We were a bit lucky to be told this by a local and we eventually found the church which is also known as Mariakirken. It is the oldest remaining building in Bergen, constructed between the 1130s and 1180s in a Romanesque and Gothic style. The church has a rich history, having been damaged by fires in 1198 and 1248, and was once associated with the German merchants of the Hanseatic League. This whole area is worth spending some time just wandering."
