What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find Viking Farm Bukkøy to be an enjoyable and informative experience, appreciating the authentic reconstructions and knowledgeable guides. Some feel that organized tours can be too short, limiting the time to fully explore the site. The uneven terrain is also a consideration for some.
"Visited here through Viking Adventures.
Tour started with a walk to the boat (5 mins) which then takes you to the viking village. The boat section is about 30 mins with narration from the guide. At the village we were guided around by one of the villagers who gave a great account of viking village life. After the tour we only had around 10 mins before having to head back to the boat, would have liked longer. All of the structures were open for you to walk around freely, they do have open fires so keep smaller kids close by.
This tour then takes you back on the boat to go to the viking planet museum.in the town centre."

"Thought there would be more "settlers" reliving the times, but poss due to funding/availability, there was only one and our guide that dressed as a "local". Still enjoyed it though but would suggest making your own way as the trip we booked didn't give us much time there to explore the area."

"Awesome place with amazing guides. Bit of a walk to get to it on some uneven terrain, so if you find walking hard might be difficult for you."

The Viking Experience: Beyond the Buildings
The surrounding forest also plays a significant role in the experience, adding to the natural and historical ambiance of the site. It's a place where you can truly feel transported back in time. For those seeking a deeper connection, attending during a Viking festival or event is highly recommended, as these occasions often feature more extensive reenactments and activities, creating a more vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.
It's important to manage expectations regarding the scale of the 'village.' While described as 'small' by some, the focus is on the authenticity and educational value of the experience. Navigating Your Visit: Tours vs. Independent Travel
Many visitors suggest that making your own way to Bukkøy provides a more relaxed and in-depth experience. This allows you to spend as much time as you wish exploring the reconstructed buildings, the surrounding forest, and potentially visiting areas that might be skipped on a tight tour schedule, such as the boathouse. If you choose this route, research local transport options or consider driving. Remember that the terrain can be uneven, so comfortable footwear is essential regardless of how you arrive.
Ultimately, the best approach depends on your travel style and priorities. If convenience is paramount and you're happy with a brief but informative introduction, a tour might suffice. If you prefer to linger, absorb the atmosphere, and explore at your own pace, independent travel is likely the more rewarding option.
