Reviews Summary
Majlis Al Jinn offers an unparalleled adventure for experienced thrill-seekers, with its dramatic vertical descent and colossal cave chamber. However, access is highly restricted, requiring permits and professional guides, and the journey involves a very challenging 4x4 drive. It's an unforgettable experience for the prepared, but not accessible to casual tourists.
"Descending into the cave is an adventure experience of a lifetime.
NOTE: In order to enter, you will need to obtain written permits from the Ministry of Tourism, and hire a team of professional accredited caving experts and specialist equipment.
As keen off-roaders, we happily drove our 4x4 up onto the plateau (this is my favourite off-road drive in the world, but not for the faint of heart!) and camped for the night near the cave entrance.
In the morning, our support team attached the lines to pegs and a pickup, and we dropped into the inky blackness. As the cave is a single giant domed chamber, the only way in is to abseil vertically down while dangling in mid-air: a process that takes 10-odd minutes. The interior of the cave is an alien and magical landscape of stalagmites and shafts of light (though there are plenty of carcasses of unlucky goats who have fallen in).
Visiting takes plenty of patience and planning, but absolutely one for the bucket list."

"- Here is some advice from experienced 4x4 driver and adventure explorer:
- It is really challenging to reach there.
- The track starts from cost to upper point of the plateau consist of very steep 1 way slippery dirt track full of 180 degrees sharp turns one next after other.
- Only 4x4 vehicles can do it that has standard proper High and Low range of 4WD looking.
- Need to be at least an intermediate level of skill and experience 4x4 driver to do it safely.
- Need to deflate tyres to 20 psi to get more grip and better traction, otherwise will be risk chance of slipping on the steep slippery dirt track turns.
- It is recommended to keep navigation screen in front of you. It shows the sharp turns before you get to it, so, helps in getting prepared with the perfect speed and transmission setup.
Don't panic or be in tense all the time, this will make you do mistakes. Just relax, enjoy and try to take it easy smoothly at fixed speed especially at turns.
- If you aren't enough experienced 4x4 driver for doing it by your self, make sure to do it with a company of well experienced one.
- Weather is nice at the top and many good views all over the trip.
- The cave doesn't have any protection barriers, It's Just looks like a huge hall in the ground, so you have to be careful with having kids there and even careful for yourself.
- Unfortunately, the cave is not accessible for ordinary people, only professional climbers with full equipment can do it.
- Anyways, It is really special experience to visit that place, ether the place it self or the track, recommended for any adventure or exploring lover to do it, only with well preparations, vehicle, company and weather."

"Road: I was a bit panicked seeing some of the reviews here. Okay maybe some folks compare it to Frankfurt-Munich autobahn, which is clearly not. However, I am not a profi driver but if you dear me, I should be able to make it in a decent sedan (e.g. 4-wheel Subaru). If you have a 4x4, and some moderate skills, you will do it in 30-40 mins one way. Now maybe I was lucky and there are times the road is in a much worse condition (torrential rain or smth...) today on 10 Oct 21 it was absolutely passable.
Views along the route: quite pleasant. Not stunning, but worth the trip.
Hole: well, it's a hole in the middle of nowhere, you can't see its bottom or anything. If you're not rappelling and can't descend, you probably find yourself getting back to the coast 5 mins after arrival.
But the whole experience was quite special, maybe it was due to a suspense about a truck-sized pot around the corner, which never happened. 5 stars.
P.S. That's my 81st country, I have seen some roads, but I consider myself a regular driver."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the drive up offers some pleasant views, the primary destination is far too hazardous for a family outing. If you're looking for adventure in Oman with children, consider other options like Wadi Shab for swimming and hiking, or the Nizwa Fort for historical exploration.
🧗♀️ Adventure Seekers & Climbers
Key considerations: Ensure you have secured the necessary permits and have booked with a reputable caving expedition company. The challenging 4x4 access also adds to the adventure. Be prepared for a physically demanding trip that requires specialized gear and a strong sense of adventure.

Tips for the drive: A high-clearance 4x4 with low-range gearing is essential. Lowering tire pressure is crucial for traction. Experienced drivers recommend taking it slow, staying calm, and using navigation aids. Going with a local guide or experienced off-roader is highly advised if you're not confident.

The Thrill of the Descent
Safety is paramount during this phase. The cave's sheer drop means any misstep or equipment failure could be catastrophic. This is why the requirement for accredited caving experts and specialist gear is non-negotiable. The journey down is not just about reaching the cave floor; it's a test of nerve and a testament to human exploration.
For those who complete the descent, the reward is an unparalleled view of the cave's interior. The sheer scale and alien beauty are breathtaking, making the challenging entry entirely worthwhile for the adventurous spirit.
Navigating the Challenging Terrain
Essential 4x4 Requirements: A robust 4x4 with proper high and low range gears is mandatory. Experienced drivers recommend deflating tires to around 20 psi to maximize grip and traction on the treacherous path. Using a navigation screen to anticipate upcoming turns is also advised to maintain control and a steady speed.
Driving Advice: The key is to remain calm and focused. Panicking can lead to mistakes. Smooth, consistent speed, especially through turns, is crucial. If you're not a confident off-road driver, hiring a guide or going with an experienced local is the safest bet. The views along the way are pleasant, adding to the overall adventure.
Understanding the Cave's Unique Geology
The cave's formation is believed to be the result of a massive underground collapse, creating this vast void. Inside, visitors encounter a surreal landscape characterized by impressive stalagmites and shafts of light that penetrate from openings above. These natural light beams create dramatic illumination, highlighting the cave's otherworldly atmosphere.
However, the cave's sheer scale and lack of safety barriers also mean it has claimed the lives of unfortunate animals, such as goats, that have fallen in. This stark reality underscores the inherent dangers and the need for extreme caution and professional guidance for any human exploration.
