"🛑 Mirbat castle is a surprisingly well kept and maintained castle - museum of ancient Dhofari history with some mention about the famous "Battle of Mirbat " of 1972 Dhofar rebellion. Fiji born British SAS ( special air services) colonial Labalabah almost single handedly managed a victory against the Dhofari rebels who had outnumbered the combined forces of Sultan of oman and British SAS. Labalabah fought valiantly killing many rebels with his machine gun and thus prevented the fall of the mirbat castle which was an important milestone in successfully ending the DHOFARI rebellion of 1960 - 70 by the great Sultan of oman.
The mirbat castle has a museum which sheds light on all aspects of omani life in dhofar. Their customs, dress, food ,food preservation methods, fishing techniques etc.
Famous British explorer Bertram Thomas visited this castle in 1932 during his lengthy sojourn all the way from Nejd , wubar , Dhofar to sham across the great and vast Rub a khali desert or the empty quarter.
Its worth one visit for a history lover.
Dhofar rebellion 1965 - -75 ---
By 1970, the situation had reached a stalemate. the communist south yemen sponsored PFLOAG [ popular front for liberation of occupied Arab gulf] rebels controlled Dhofar’s 80 % interior, while government forces controlled the densely populated coastal plain and administrative center of Salalah including taqah and mirbat.
The athesim of the communists was not entirely liked by the dhofari muslims.
British adopted the COIN strategy to win hearts and minds of Dhofar after their initial setback .
After 1970 al nahda -- SQ Qaboos’s amnesty campaign helped to establish an effective tribal militia, known as firqats,by providing an opportunity for former insurgents to return to their
tribal areas to serve as irregular forces under the leadership of British SAS detachments.
Civil action teams drilled wells, built schools, repaired mosques, and provided medical and veterinary services.
JORDAN , IRAN [ 4000] , SAUDI provided troops . on request of sq .
A fortified barrier [ Hornbeam and Damavand lines] between rebel sanctuaries in South Yemen and population centers in Dhofar. These cordon sanitaires reduced the flow of insurgents
and weapons into dhofar and hindered PFLOAG’s ability to sustain its guerrilla forces."
