What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Pahalgam Mini Zoo offers a unique experience with its uphill trek to see a limited but impressive array of wildlife, including snow leopards and bears. While the natural setting is beautiful and the entry fee is very low, some visitors find the number of animals disproportionate to the effort of the trek, and concerns about animal welfare have been raised.
"It's a very small Zoo (as the name suggests) but it is one of the most beautiful zoos i have ever seen. One thing is to be noted that the climb in a little substantial and not really recommended for the elderly because there are very few animals. Otherwise its very beautiful and good. They have Snow leopard, leopard, Himalayan Brown Bear, black bears etc. Give it a visit!"

"Visited there it has a ticket of Rs.20 for adults, there are around 2 vers brown, black both, 2 leopards and 1 snow leopard who us very old. The only drawback is that one needs to trek to reach the animals as they are located uphill, not at all handicapped freindly."
Shivangi Singhal
"There are very few animals. So as for the adults not much to see in there and the walk you have to walk for this amout of animals is not so worthy but yeah exciting for the kiddos!
Ps: It went disheartening for me to see these beautiful creatures caged. It's a very small place. It's more of a cage than a zoo!
And what was more disheartening to me is some of the morons were teasing animals while throwing things at them. I am not sure if cctvs out there are functional as I realised it by myself they are in no mood to take any action against such violence because for them it's nothing more than a business!"

The Trek and the Wildlife
While the trek is a highlight for some, it's crucial to be prepared. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and it's not an accessible location for those with mobility challenges. The number of animals is limited, so managing expectations is key. It's often described as more of a 'cage' than a traditional zoo, which can be disheartening for some visitors, especially when witnessing animals in captivity.
Despite the limited number of animals, the surrounding natural beauty of Pahalgam enhances the visit. The zoo offers a chance to see some of the region's iconic wildlife, making it a worthwhile stop for nature enthusiasts who are prepared for the terrain.
Visitor Experience and Concerns
However, some visitors express disappointment with the small number of animals relative to the effort required for the trek. There are also concerns raised about animal welfare, with some describing the enclosures as cages and noting instances of visitors mistreating the animals. The lack of visible action against such behavior is a point of concern for some.
Despite these drawbacks, the zoo's location within the stunning landscape of Pahalgam adds to its appeal. It's a place where the natural beauty of Kashmir complements the wildlife viewing experience, offering a unique, albeit sometimes challenging, visit.
