"This short loop trail (about 3km roundtrip) is FANTASTIC. NOTE: Many of the pictures posted here in google maps are of other places - there are no streams, no rivers and no waterfalls on this trail. It is just a loop trail through beautifull cloudforest with good strong benches to rest along the way to the Mirador. The eastern half of the loop (0.9 KM) is much flater and easier than the western half (0.6 KM). Along the way, many bromeliads and orchids are visible. Birds like trogons and hummingbirds (feeding on ericaceous epiphites) are also common.
The lookout point looks south towards the crater bottom which is occupied by the town of El Valle de Antón; you really get a sense for the gigantic dormant crater from here. The Mirador/lookout does not look to El Picacho mountain (seen in some pictures incorrectly posted). Looking south beyond the crater, you can sometimes see the Pacific coast in the distance, weather permitting. On the back, looking north and if there are no clouds you can see the La Mesa area, with scattered houses, more cloud forest, and chicken coops.
Lookout platform: The new (2023), safe, sturdy lookout platform has room for about 15 people and seating for about 5. Safe for children thanks to sturdy metal railing all around. A place to relax and hang out - enjoy the view and the misty mountain breezes flowing in from the distant Caribbean after your uphill hike.
"La Gaita" and "El Gaital" are different places; some of the missposting of photographs seems to stem from confusion with these.
Public Transport: this trail is accesible with public transport, minibuses marked "El Valle - La Mesa" leave from near the Public Market in El Valle and drop you off right by the entrance to the trail (ask the bus driver and show them the pictures of the entrance trail here in Google Maps, "Sendero El Gaital"). It is about 30-40 minutes by Minubus from the market. If you will be at the market, it is worth it to ask around for the current frequency of the minibuses to La Mesa and the time of the 1st and last bus. These same minibuses can drop you off at Chorro El Macho along the way, so it can be an outdoor day with those 2 destinations.
Rain: Be ready for rain at anytime on this trail. It is much rainier than at the town of El Valle proper."

"Nice place with a very rich flora and some fauna as well. We were lucky to find a sloth on the tree, just next to the trail. There is a common trail first and then you can choose the easier one (0.9km) or the more difficult one (0.6km). I had a feeling both were longer than that (seems like they took the air distance and just went with it). Take long pants and good shoes as there are many areas with mud and slippery rocks. The view from the top is nice."
