Reviews Summary

Casco Antiguo is widely praised for its stunning, colorful architecture, rich history, and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors love its walkability, diverse dining options, and lively nightlife, especially from rooftop bars. However, some find it to be a 'tourist trap' with higher prices and persistent street marketing.

"Casco Antiguo/ Casco Viejo/ San Felipe has many names, but the history, diverse architecture, food, accommodations, etc. are all wonderful. Take a walking tour for sure and hear the city's history come alive with how important Panama was to explorers and the world. Friendly people everywhere!"

Tim Couch

"No tickets are required. Casco Viejo is a small section of Panama located on the edge of the city. It is full of contrasts and has something for everyone. While the Presidential Palace is off-limits to tourists, there are plenty of things to see and enjoy. It has plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, art exhibits, old churches, and much more. You can arrive in the afternoon, shop, eat, participate in activities, and stay for the Nightlife."

Jonathan McBride

"Casco Viejo is, of course, a tourist trap due to the nature of it: museums, gorgeous architecture, the cobbled streets, and European charm. Be prepared to pay American prices at cafes, restaurants and museums. It’s also busy and you will be pulled into restaurants and tourist shops by relatively aggressive street level marketing. However, it is safe (perhaps besides the drain on your bank account) and possible to view sites and architecture free of cost, if you visit churches and simply walk the beautiful streets.
We prefer immersive experiences where we are forced to soak the local language, but casco viejo is a must see. For a broader perspective on Panama that isn’t Eurocentric, on the outskirts, we viewed murals and signage relating to resisting gentrification, honoring the Guna population and an adjacent Afro-Caribbean community in complete disrepair. It’s fascinating and concerning to see a well preserved and policed historic district where a latte is $10 right next to el chinos and tenement style buildings with people hanging out on broken streets"
