Lares Trek to Machu Picchu with @on ☁️ Yesterday, I got back from spending two restorative weeks in Peru for the #TravelWithNat to Peru group tour. This was my third annual Peru trip in partnership with @firststepexpeditions, and my third trek to Machu Picchu. In Peru, the religion of the Incas was called Pacha Mama, or Mother Earth. The belief was grounded in honoring and living in community w...

Reviews Summary

The Lares Trek is highly praised for its stunning Andean scenery, authentic cultural immersion with local communities, and the relaxing hot springs. Many appreciate it as a less crowded alternative to the Inca Trail, offering a more personal connection to Peru's heritage. However, the high altitude presents a significant challenge, requiring careful acclimatization.

"The Rainbow Mountain hike - a must-see

The Rainbow Mountain trek was the most beautiful valley I’ve ever seen in my life. Our tour guide came to pick us up at the hotel on time and ran everything perfectly. Despite bouts of rainy weather, he timed things so we summited with the sun.

The altitude is a real factor here so to help you, the guide gave everyone a nice Jasmin spray to open up our nasal passage and some extra coca pick me up. I had all the usual symptoms of altitude sickness - headache, pressure in the eyes, feeling weak and despite all that I made it because the tour guide was patient and encouraging. I’d say you need 2-4 days of acclimatization before you even think of attempting this - it’s over 16,500ft and roughly 6km or 3 miles return. Even with a tiny elevation gain of 338m/1200ft, you’ll feel it. If you can’t get physically do it, you can rent a horse to take you as well. Along the way are many benches and stops, a bathroom (2 soles), and snack vendors.

This is an absolute must-see area if you’re in Peru. Highly recommend this local company and our tour guide, Mauro."

Frequently Asked Questions

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

Most Lares Trek tours begin with transportation from Cusco. This typically involves a scenic drive to the Lares Valley, which can take several hours. Some tours might arrange pick-ups from the Sacred Valley as well. It's crucial to confirm your starting point and transportation details with your tour operator. TikTokInstagram

The most common way to reach Cusco is by flying from Lima, Peru's capital. International flights usually arrive in Lima, and then you'll take a domestic flight to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco. Book flights in advance, especially during peak season. Reddit

While technically possible, it's highly discouraged and often not recommended by tour operators. The Lares Trek involves remote areas, challenging terrain, and requires navigation skills. Hiring a guide ensures safety, provides cultural insights, and often includes logistical support like camping and meals. Instagram+1

After visiting Machu Picchu, you'll typically take a train from Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) to Ollantaytambo, and then a bus or taxi back to Cusco. Some tours include this return transportation as part of the package. Reddit

Yes, the most famous alternative is the Inca Trail. Other popular options include the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek combined with a short Inca Trail segment. The Lares Trek is often chosen for its cultural immersion and fewer crowds compared to the Inca Trail. Instagram+1

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

Yes, absolutely. The Lares Trek itself does not grant you entry into the Machu Picchu citadel. You will need to purchase a separate entrance ticket for Machu Picchu, which should be booked well in advance, often months ahead, as they sell out quickly. Reddit

It's highly recommended to book your Lares Trek tour at least 3-6 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the dry season (May to October). This ensures availability with your preferred tour operator and allows for better planning. Instagram

The Lares Trek can be done in various durations, commonly 3 days or 4 days. A 3-day trek usually involves trekking and then taking a train to Machu Picchu. A 4-day trek offers a more immersive experience with more time for cultural interaction and stunning scenery before reaching Machu Picchu. Instagram+1

Yes, there is usually a small entrance fee to access the natural hot springs in Lares. This fee is often included in organized tours, but if you are visiting independently, be prepared to pay a nominal amount upon arrival. TikTok

You can book a Lares Trek tour through various online travel agencies, directly with tour operators based in Cusco, or through your accommodation. Reading reviews and comparing itineraries is recommended. Many companies like Lares Trip, Alpaca Expeditions, and TreXperience are frequently mentioned. InstagramReddit+1

🎫 ⛰️ Onsite Experience

The Lares Trek reaches high altitudes, with the highest point often around 4,800 meters (15,750 feet). Altitude sickness is a significant risk. It's crucial to acclimatize in Cusco for 2-4 days before starting the trek, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. Coca tea and medication can help. InstagramReddit

Expect breathtaking Andean landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lagoons, dramatic valleys, and diverse flora and fauna. You'll also encounter traditional farming communities and their livestock, including llamas and alpacas. Instagram+1

The Lares Trek is considered moderately to highly challenging due to the altitude and steep ascents/descents. While not as technically difficult as some other treks, good physical fitness and proper acclimatization are essential. Instagram

The Lares Trek is renowned for its authentic cultural immersion. You'll have opportunities to interact with local Quechua communities, learn about their traditions, witness their daily lives, and understand their connection to the land. Instagram+1

Pack layers of clothing (thermal base layers, fleece, waterproof outer shell), sturdy hiking boots, a warm hat and gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp, a reusable water bottle, and personal toiletries. A good quality backpack is also essential. Instagram

🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Most organized Lares Trek tours include delicious meals prepared by a dedicated chef. Expect hearty, nutritious meals featuring local ingredients, such as soups, stews, rice dishes, and fresh vegetables. Vegetarian and other dietary needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Reddit

While there are occasional small stalls in villages selling snacks and drinks, options are limited and prices can be higher. It's best to carry your own supply of snacks, energy bars, and water, especially for longer trekking days. Reddit

Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, offers a wide range of dining options, from local Peruvian cuisine to international dishes. You'll find everything from casual eateries to more upscale restaurants. Reddit

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water directly. Most tour operators provide boiled or purified water. Carrying a water filter or purification tablets is a good idea for independent trekkers, or ensure your tour provides safe drinking water. Reddit

The first day often includes breakfast before departing Cusco, followed by lunch en route or upon arrival at the trek's starting point. Dinner will be provided at the campsite. Meals are typically designed to be filling and energizing for the trek. Reddit

📸 📸 Photography

The Lares Trek offers endless photo opportunities! Capture the stunning Andean landscapes, the vibrant colors of traditional clothing, the daily life of local communities, llamas and alpacas, and of course, the majestic Machu Picchu. Sunrise and sunset over the mountains are particularly spectacular. TikTokInstagram

A versatile camera with a good zoom lens is recommended to capture both landscapes and details. Consider a wide-angle lens for expansive mountain views and a telephoto lens for wildlife. A sturdy tripod can be useful for low-light conditions or long exposures. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards! TikTok

You'll likely encounter llamas and alpacas roaming freely. Be patient and respectful. Approach them slowly and avoid sudden movements. Natural light is best, so try to photograph them during the golden hours (early morning or late afternoon). Instagram

Photography is generally allowed within Machu Picchu, but tripods and selfie sticks are often prohibited inside the main citadel. Drones are also strictly forbidden. Always be mindful of other visitors and avoid blocking pathways. Reddit

The 'golden hours' around sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic and beautiful light for landscape photography. Midday can be harsh, but it's still great for capturing the vibrant colors of the villages and people. TikTok
