Reviews Summary

Travelers consistently praise the Salkantay Trek for its breathtaking Andean scenery and the rewarding arrival at Machu Picchu. The challenging nature of the trek is balanced by excellent guides, delicious food, and comfortable accommodations provided by reputable tour operators. Some find the cost high, but most agree it's a worthwhile investment for an unforgettable experience.

"We had an unforgettable experience on the Lares Trek thanks to the incredible team behind it.

Percy, our guide, was patient, positive, and always encouraging, especially when my partner was sick on the first day. He pushed us to do our best while respecting our limits and shared so much knowledge and humor along the way.

Julio-Cesar, the chef, amazed us every day with delicious, nourishing meals prepared in the middle of the mountains. He even made a special herbal tea for my partner when he was unwell. His happy and caring attitude made every meal feel like a treat.

A huge thanks to Esteban and Bryan, the two hardworking horsemen who carried our bags, set up and took down our tents, and brought us hot tea in the mornings. Their dedication made our trek much easier and more comfortable.

The whole team made this journey beyond our expectations truly an adventure we’ll never forget. Highly recommended!"

"10/10 recommended, best experience!!

We did the 5-Day Salkantay Trek and Salkantay Trekking exceeded our expectations by far.

Our Guide: Our guide Raul was very knowledgeable, took time for questions and explanations, and genuinely cared that everyone in the group had a great experience.
We booked the trek without Machu Picchu tickets (as they were sold out), and Raul was incredibly helpful in finding tickets, organizing our way back, and arranging storage for our luggage — even though we couldn’t return with the group. Big shoutout to Raul!

Accommodations: Outstanding accommodations and by far the best we saw among all agencies along the way. 2/3 had private bathrooms and hot showers; all were super clean and comfortable.

Food: We had a team of two chefs and the food was amazing. I’m vegetarian, and they provided excellent vegetarian options. Overall, the food was plentiful and delicious.

Salkantay Trek in general: A fantastic experience with breathtaking views. I think it’s manageable for anyone who enjoys hiking. I recommend getting used to the altitude before starting the trek, but other than that, no special preparation is needed."

Lena Röslmaier

"Our group of 24 finished the 5 day premium trek this week. This trip was an experience none of us will ever forget. Our guides Jorge and Ruben were exceptional, no detail was ever missed and their experience and teachings made this a 5 star plus experience. The trek itself was challenging and rewarding. The Andes will forever have our hearts!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Altitude Sickness: Prevention and Management

The Salkantay Trek reaches extreme altitudes, with the Salkantay Pass peaking at over 15,000 feet. Altitude sickness, or soroche, can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. The most crucial preventative measure is acclimatization. Spend at least 48 hours in Cusco (around 11,500 ft) before starting your trek. During this time, avoid strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and eat light meals. TikTok

Many trekkers find relief and prevention through coca leaves (chewing them or drinking coca tea) and altitude sickness medication like Diamox, which should be prescribed by a doctor. TikTokInstagram+1 During the trek, listen to your body. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. If symptoms worsen, inform your guide immediately. They are experienced in managing altitude-related issues and may recommend descending or resting. TikTok

Key Takeaways:
* Acclimatize: Minimum 48 hours in Cusco before the trek. TikTok
* Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. TikTok
* Consider medication: Consult your doctor about Diamox. TikTok
* Listen to your body: Report any symptoms to your guide promptly. TikTok

Choosing Your Salkantay Trek Company

Selecting the right Salkantay Trek company is vital for a safe and enjoyable experience. While prices can vary, the cheapest option isn't always the best. Look for companies with a strong reputation for safety, experienced guides, and good customer service. TikTokInstagram Many travelers recommend companies like Salkantay Trekking for their excellent organization, food, and accommodations. TikTokReddit

Consider what's included in the price. Most reputable tours cover transportation, meals, accommodation, guides, and Machu Picchu entry. TikTokInstagram Some companies offer 'premium' treks with better lodges and amenities. Reddit Reading recent reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor or asking for recommendations on travel forums can provide valuable insights. TikTokReddit

Key Considerations:
* Reputation & Reviews: Check recent feedback from other trekkers. Reddit
* Inclusions: Verify what the tour package covers (meals, transport, tickets). TikTok
* Guide Quality: Experienced and knowledgeable guides enhance the experience. Reddit
* Accommodation Standards: Understand the type of lodging provided. Reddit

Packing Essentials for the Salkantay Trek

Packing smart for the Salkantay Trek is crucial due to the varied terrain and unpredictable weather. Layers are your best friend. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or down jacket for insulation, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. TikTok+1 Don't forget a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf, as mountain nights can be frigid. TikTok

Footwear is paramount. Invest in sturdy, broken-in, waterproof hiking boots. Trekking poles can significantly reduce strain on your knees, especially during descents. Reddit Other essentials include a headlamp for early mornings and evenings, sunscreen and a hat for sun protection, a reusable water bottle or hydration reservoir, and a basic first-aid kit. TikTok+1 While porters carry group gear, you'll need a comfortable daypack for essentials you'll access during the day. TikTok
