Reviews Summary

Laguna Churup is a highly rewarding, albeit challenging, day hike from Huaraz, celebrated for its stunning turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. While the altitude and steep, rocky terrain require good physical condition and acclimatization, most visitors find the effort well worth the breathtaking views. It's a popular spot, so expect company, but the natural beauty is undeniable.

"Good acclimatisation hike. Takes almost 2 hours to get to the lake!"

Ulia Bogush

"Beautiful spot for an easy acclimatisation hike 6km return trip. You can get there using a colectivo bus."

Catalina Silva

"This is a location about 40 minutes by motorcycle from the center of Huaraz.
You can stop at the parking lot and start climbing the mountain. Most of the path consists of stairs; it's not exactly a trail for easy walking, but rather steps.
You'll climb the steps for about 90 minutes to reach the destination. In terms of difficulty, it's not easy—it's quite challenging. At an altitude of over 4000 meters, each step is very tough, exhausting, and requires good physical preparation and a strong spirit.
However, when you arrive, you'll find it very worthwhile. Up there, you'll find a waterfall and a very beautiful lake. You can bring food for a picnic here. The descent is easier, but be very careful.

This is a very popular spot, and there were quite a few people there on the day I visited.

The entrance fee is 30 sol per person, and parking is free. They have no food and drink to sell up there!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Altitude Challenge: Acclimatization is Key

Laguna Churup is situated at a significant altitude of 4,450 meters (14,600 feet). This means that even a relatively short hike can feel incredibly strenuous if you haven't properly acclimatized. Travelers consistently emphasize the importance of spending at least one to two days in Huaraz (3,100 meters) before attempting this trek. During this time, engaging in easier, lower-altitude activities like walking around town or visiting nearby sites can help your body adjust. Ignoring acclimatization can lead to altitude sickness, which can ruin your trip. TikTokInstagramReddit

Many visitors find that even with acclimatization, the hike is demanding. The thin air makes every step feel heavier, and shortness of breath is common. Listening to your body, taking frequent breaks, and staying hydrated are crucial. If you experience severe headaches, nausea, or dizziness, it's best to descend. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the experience, not to push yourself to dangerous limits. InstagramReddit

Navigating the Trail: From Gentle Path to Rocky Scramble

The trail to Laguna Churup is not a leisurely stroll; it's a proper hike with varying technical challenges. The initial part from Pitec is a steep ascent, often described as a series of stone steps. As you get closer to the lake, the terrain becomes more rugged and rocky. A notable section involves a scramble where hikers use ropes or metal chains bolted into the rock face to pull themselves up. This adds an element of adventure and excitement for many. InstagramReddit

For those who prefer to avoid the more technical scramble, there is an alternative path to the left of the final stretch. While this route might be less physically demanding in terms of climbing, it still requires good stamina due to the altitude and steepness. Regardless of the path chosen, sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are essential. The descent also requires caution, as loose rocks can make it slippery. TikTokReddit

The Reward: A Pristine Alpine Gem

The effort of the hike is undeniably rewarded upon reaching Laguna Churup. The lake is renowned for its stunning, almost surreal, turquoise and emerald waters, which change color depending on the sunlight and the angle of observation. This vibrant hue, set against the backdrop of the imposing Nevado Churup and the rugged Cordillera Blanca, creates a postcard-perfect scene. Instagram+2

Many visitors describe the lake as a place of immense beauty and tranquility, despite its popularity. It's a fantastic spot for a picnic lunch, allowing you to soak in the breathtaking scenery. For the truly adventurous, an additional hike can lead to Laguna Churupita, a smaller, more secluded lake situated at an even higher altitude, offering a different perspective and a sense of wilder beauty.
