Reviews Summary
Chimpa Fortress is a highly recommended destination for its breathtaking views and well-preserved pre-Inca ruins. While the hike can be challenging, visitors find it absolutely worth the effort. The chance to spot condors and experience the dramatic Colca Canyon landscape makes it a memorable visit.
"Not so easy to get to, but absolutely worth it.
It is about an hour’s drive by taxi from Yanque through villages like Lari and Madrigal. On the way, you will get a good impression of rural life in the valley. When you arrive at the parking lot, you can take the 2.5 km hike uphill, or you can drive further up on a newly built dirt road (4wd recommended, but locals manage without 😅). There is another parking lot about 1 km from the top. Then you walk up some steep serpentines. There are a few shaded benches on the way up to rest and catch your breath. Once you reach the Ventana de la Chimpa (Chimpa’s window), you’re almost there. The fort itself sits between the valley and the canyon, and has been reconstructed 2001. There are two viewpoints (miradores) on either side for beautiful vistas. We went on a weekday in December and were the only ones by far. Highly recommended!"
