Tambopata Peru trip to macaw clay lick was phenomenal. Three species of macaws eat clay for sodium content.
We took a flight to Puerto Maldonado and then a 2 hour ride up the Madre de Dios river to Refugio Amazonas lodge. The next morning we got up at 430 am for another 2 hour ride upriver to the clay lick. A lot of travel but an unforgettable experience.

The fact that you have to stay a bit further away is actually a positive thing: this way, the animals' habitat is respected and they continue to feel safe. The guides were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They talked not only about the macaws themselves, but also about the importance of the clay lick and the surrounding ecology.
