What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the unique cultural experiences offered by the Uros and Taquile islands, with the stunning scenery of Lake Titicaca being a major draw. However, many travelers report feeling scammed by hidden fees and aggressive sales tactics on tours originating from Port Puno.
"Typical tourist trap: boat tour to the floating islands 18 sol per person (10 was advertised, sudden 8 sol tax extra per person). After you wait 40 minutes till the boat is full, you are dropped of at a small place where you are supposed to buy something. 30 minutes later in order to leave the place you should take another boat, they ask 15 soles per person. Very limited educative value, very much about your money."

"Well organised, easy to board and unboard"
Francois Edwards
"I do not recommend buying a colectivo from the port to the Uros islands. The woman who sold us tickets first said that a return colectivo per person costs 10 soles. Then, when we got on the boat, it turned out that we had to pay an additional 10 soles for entry to 2 islands, which is supposedly obligatory. When we asked if this was the total cost, the woman said yes and nothing more. We waited 30 minutes for the start. Then, on the first island of Uros (for which we paid the woman at the port) you are assigned to a family on the island, who dress you up in costumes, take pictures, it is hard to refuse. As a token of gratitude, you should buy something from this family, this is not a problem even though the prices are higher than in the city. But the biggest scam is that families take you on a boat to sail to another island and demand 20 soles for it. Everyone using the colectivo was forced to do so, so it was really a private trip, not a colectivo for people who just want to see the islands. I do not recommend it, I feel cheated and felt uncomfortable on the island."

Understanding the Uros Floating Islands
However, it's important to be aware that the Uros experience can be quite commercialized. Many travelers report feeling pressured to buy handicrafts or pay for additional services not initially agreed upon. While the cultural aspect is fascinating, managing expectations regarding the tourist-centric nature of some Uros communities is key.
Despite the commercial aspects, the Uros islands remain a must-see for their unique cultural significance and the opportunity to glimpse a lifestyle unlike any other. Engaging respectfully and clarifying all costs upfront will help ensure a more positive experience.
Navigating Lake Titicaca Boat Tours
Common scams involve advertised prices that don't include mandatory island entrance fees or extra charges for transport between islands. Some tours might also include mandatory stops at souvenir shops or family homes where purchasing is implicitly expected. Redditors strongly advise clarifying the number of islands visited, the duration of the tour, and any additional costs upfront to avoid unpleasant surprises.
For a smoother experience, consider booking tours through reputable agencies or your accommodation. While the allure of Lake Titicaca is undeniable, being a savvy traveler and asking detailed questions will help you enjoy the stunning scenery and unique cultures without falling victim to common tourist traps.
The Cultural Significance of Taquile Island
Taquile operates on a communal system, and visitors are encouraged to respect their social norms. The island is known for its high-quality textiles, and purchasing them directly from the weavers is a great way to support the local community. The island also boasts beautiful hiking trails with spectacular views of Lake Titicaca.
Unlike Uros, Taquile is generally considered less commercialized and offers a more authentic glimpse into Andean life. The journey to Taquile is typically a full-day trip from Puno, allowing ample time to explore its landscapes and cultural heritage.
