Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the magical firefly watching experience and the serene beauty of the mangrove forests along Abatan River. While the natural spectacle is highly praised, some note that noisy motorboats can detract from the tranquility, and tour timings can sometimes be rushed. Overall, it's a highly recommended natural attraction in Bohol.

"This review is for the river itself, it was amazing and full of life, kayaking is the best way to get around. There are lots of routes that you could potentially get lost in, make sure to follow your guide. The water is naturally murky, but okay to swim in. Luckily, we haven't encountered any dangerous animals or insects in the 4 hours we were there. And keep an eye on the current, it gets tiring paddling against it. Enjoy!"

"Its so cool but there are shipworms in Abatan River...
They live on freshwater on Abatan river in Bohol
But Beware of sharks. Such as: Butandeng (Whale Shark or Carpet Shark) Many Animals live in the water Such as Sharks: Butandeng, Pating and more. These Creatures Belong on water. but these shipworms are Different. They Belong on freshwater."

"Abatan River, on the southwestern coast of Bohol island, exits into the sea near the town of Cortes. I used to have a boatyard on the river bank just half a nautical mile from the mouth of Abatan in a tiny village called Salvador, Cortes (BDMARINE). The visayan word "Abatan" means "meeting place"... Apparently, in the days before the bridge which spans this major river was built, folks from the west and further north would meet up with those from the east (and the capital city, Tagbilaran) where the road terminated upon the opposing river banks, a small canoe was then needed to ferry travellers across to continue on their journeys east or west, hence the name. 8 years I had that yard, building custom one-off small craft, mostly for foreign clients, 1994 till I shut it down in 2002. I also built quite a few sea kayaks, and paddled up and down this river, at times exploring up to about 6nm upriver, where the river became too shallow to allow passage for the very shallow draft of my kayaks. Beautiful Riverside scenery, tranquility and around every twist and turn of the meandering River awaited another glimpse at the simple rural lives of the boholanos who live on her banks and the land they till. I will take these fond memories of the river and bohol to my grave. Exquisite simplicity, devoid of modern complexity.. So sad that it barely exists anymore."
