What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Carabao Island is lauded as a hidden gem offering an authentic, peaceful escape from mass tourism. Visitors praise its pristine beaches, vibrant underwater life, and the genuine warmth of its locals. While amenities are basic and beaches could be cleaner, the island's untouched beauty and laid-back atmosphere make it a highly recommended destination for those seeking tranquility and a true taste of Filipino island culture.
"Carabao island, a hidden gem! I was here 2 years ago and want to share my experience
This island is located right next to the famous tourist destination of boracay, they are about 5 kilometers away from each other, but compared to Boracay this island doesn't even receive 1% of the tourism.
You can not get here from Boracay, you need to go to the same harbour as from where the boats to Boracay leave, be warned as there are only 2 boats a day that go to carabao, and these boats are both for passengers and cargo, the boat ride can take up to an hour and isn't particularly comfortable. But when you arrive on the island it's all worth it.
There are only 2 resorts (1 fancy and 1 more budget friendly) and a handful of restaurants on the island. It isn't catered towards tourists at all, which if you ask me is amazing as it makes the island experience very authentic. There is quite a big cliff jumping complex, a remnant to the past when Boracay still did day tours to the island to do said activity.
The nature of the island is very well preserved. The beaches aren't as clean as on Boracay as there is no tourist program where tourists pay the salaries of beach cleaners. But the underwater environment here is out of this world. I went diving with the only dive school on the island (they have since left and I am not sure if a new school has replaced them) and the quality of the Coral and underwater life was amazing. The Coral is quite close to the surface so it's also great for snorkeling. The vegetation on the island is beautiful and wild, everywhere you look it's green.
The people on the island were super friendly and relaxed, a sharp contrast to Boracay where it's all about money. On this island you can still experience the traditional Filipino island culture. Overall it was a great experience and I am very happy I could spend some time here. This is a place I highly recommend and definitely want to return to!"

"Carabao – a pearl in the shadow of Boracay
While Boracay is bustling with tourists and luxury resorts, Carabao remains a quiet, untouched island where the locals happily welcome every visitor. After the pandemic, they are still patiently waiting for tourists to return and help rebuild the local economy. Covid has greatly destroyed the economy, you can see the lack of tourists, many places are closed, it is worth coming and supporting this place, the loyal ones are very happy when they see tourists and they are very friendly. Of course, the beaches could be cleaned (this is a tip for the locals to encourage them even more) because the island itself is wonderful
This is a place without crowds, where nature delights with white beaches, turquoise water and picturesque cliffs. Carabao is the Philippines before mass tourism - authentic, peaceful and full of hospitality. The ferry to Carabao is next to the ferry to Boracay. You can easily get around the island by scooter or with the help of people who take you on a motorbike (their help does not cost much money and it is a way to earn money). There are almost no tourists on the island - great for people who are not interested in the fame and glamour of Boracay."
