Reviews Summary

Visitors describe the Lumiang-Sumaguing Cave Connection as an incredibly thrilling and unforgettable adventure, blending historical discovery with extreme physical challenge. While many praise the unique experience and stunning rock formations, some caution about the inherent dangers and the need for excellent physical condition and a good guide. TikTokReddit

"Are you willing to decend into the darkness and depths of Lumiang Cave? It is one of the most exciting, adventurous, and dangerous things to do in Sagada. I recommend using a guide so they can point out the interesting features of the cave. This underground trek is broken down into 3 stages, each with its own characteristic. Many photo opportunities abound in the cave. Stage 1 is slippery, so be careful. You walk and climb down some stairs and craggy rocks, which warms you up for the adventure and danger ahead. Stage 2 is where you take off your footwear, and you start to wade on the water. The depth of the water will depend on if the season is wet or dry and ranges from ankle to thigh deep. The funnest part was the repeling portion. Just hold on and follow your guides instructions. Stage 3 includes fitting through a tiny opening and then getting waist deep into the water as well as a portion that you need to hold on to a rope as you traverse the cave wall. The cave spelunking lasts about 3 to 4 hours in and out, and the last entry into the cave is at 5pm.Be brave, be bold, and listen to your guide."

"The ‘connecting’ cave tour was the craziest experience I’ve done in my life. BE WARNED!

Firstly, the entrance of Lumiang cave is an astonishing historical, spiritual and cultural site with the 300-year-old burial caskets tucked along the side and its crevices. Earthquakes have resulted in broken caskets with human skeletons to be littered further down the entrance. You’ll be walking through these as you enter deeper into the cave.

Here’s where you start your Lumiang - Sumaguing cave connector tour. We were NOT warned or informed of what this would be, so we had no clue that we would end up doing something so dramatic, dangerous and mind-blowing. We thought we would just sightsee two caves, but we eventually found out we were in for a CRAZY 3 hour, 3 kilometer, extremely dangerous, cave climb which required squeezing through tiny cracks/crevices to climbing up slippery rocks into certain sections that were 40 story high chambers. All the while underground waterfalls and rivers raged around us.

There are at least 3 sections that are life threatening sections where a slip would have resulted in certain death or a fall down the abyss for a casket-less burial.

The Lumiang section is the most dangerous and slippery. Once you get through the ‘connector’, a hole in the wall where you’ll be dangling by a rope above a dangerous waterfall chamber, you’ll reach the Sumaguing section which is not so slippery.

Once we got out alive, it was one of the most insane and amazing experiences we had done.

But do ensure that you are 1. absolutely fit 2. Do not suffer from claustrophobia 3. Do not have any injuries (you’ll need to use all your muscles) 4. Are not overweight (so you will fit through certain sections) 5. Will stay calm when confronted with life-threatening situations

If you pass the above, then make sure you have good climbing shoes. And this will be a one of a kind experience."

Gerard Heinen

"Both a heritage and adventure visit. A must experience for cultural understanding of how our ancestors live. Less challenging than Sumaguing cave but you can enter Lumiang and exit Sumaguing cave for those who are fit and not claustrophobic."

These coffins, some dating back centuries, are a testament to the unique burial practices of the Igorot people of Sagada. Navigating the Cave Connection: A Physical Challenge

The Lumiang-Sumaguing Cave Connection is renowned for its extreme spelunking experience. It's a multi-stage adventure that tests your physical limits. The journey begins in Lumiang Cave, where you'll navigate past the coffins and begin your descent. This initial stage often involves slippery rocks and narrow passages. TikTokReddit

As you progress, you'll enter sections requiring you to squeeze through tight crevices, climb up steep, wet rocks, and even wade through waist-deep water in underground streams. Rappelling down sections using ropes is also part of the thrill. The guides are crucial here, showing you the safest routes and providing assistance. Many travelers describe it as a 'buwis-buhay' (life-risking) adventure, emphasizing the need for courage and physical preparedness. InstagramReddit

Sumaguing Cave, the exit point, is known for its spectacular natural rock formations. These formations, sculpted over millennia by water, create breathtaking underground landscapes. Essential Gear and Preparation

To make the most of the Lumiang-Sumaguing Cave Connection and ensure your safety, proper preparation is key. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with excellent grip are non-negotiable. Quick-drying clothing is also essential. You'll be sweating from the exertion and getting wet from the cave's water features. Avoid cotton, which stays wet and heavy. A waterproof bag or dry bag is highly recommended for your phone, camera, and any other valuables you bring. While guides usually provide headlamps, having your own reliable light source can be a good backup. TikTok+1

Mentally, be prepared for the claustrophobic elements and the physical demands. If you have any injuries or health conditions that might be exacerbated by strenuous activity, it's best to reconsider.
