Reviews Summary

San Joaquin Church is lauded for its unique Battle of Tetuan pediment and impressive Spanish-colonial architecture, offering a serene historical experience. While some renovations have raised conservation concerns, its status as a National Cultural Treasure makes it a significant destination for history and art enthusiasts.

"Tucked away in the charming town of San Joaquin, Iloilo, lies a stunning piece of history that will transport you back in time. The San Joaquin Church, also known as the Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne, is a breathtaking example of Spanish-era architecture that will leave you in awe.

As you approach the church, you're immediately struck by its imposing façade, which exudes a sense of grandeur and elegance. The church's stone walls, adorned with intricate carvings and ornate details, seem to whisper tales of the past. The moment you step inside, you're enveloped in a sense of serenity and tranquility, with the soft light filtering through the stained-glass windows casting a kaleidoscope of colors on the floor.

The church's interior is a masterclass in Baroque architecture, with its ornate altar, beautifully crafted wooden pews, and stunning frescoes adorning the ceiling. Every detail, from the delicate carvings to the vibrant colors, seems to have been carefully preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage.

What sets San Joaquin Church apart, however, is its unique blend of Spanish and Filipino influences. The church's design reflects the cultural exchange that occurred during the Spanish colonial period, resulting in a distinctive style that's both familiar and exotic.

As you explore the church, you'll notice the subtle nuances that make this place so special. From the beautifully maintained gardens to the historic artifacts on display, every aspect of the church seems to have been carefully curated to showcase the region's history.

San Joaquin Church is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, or culture. This stunning church is a testament to the region's rich heritage and a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the unlikeliest of places. Whether you're a history buff, a architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique experience, San Joaquin Church is sure to leave a lasting impression."

"The first time I caught sight of the San Joaquin Church was in 2019 if I'm not mistaken. During a company outing, I recognized this unmistakably old church with a solitary belfry jutting out of the poblacion at a great distance from the top of the hill in Garinfarm which is the main tourist attraction of this southern-most town of Iloilo. Little did I know then that the Spanish colonial church is the true gem of San Joaquin where the Barter of Panay happened, for its historical significance and aesthetic value.
Belle and I commenced our interest in visiting stone churches with our Southern Iloilo Stone Churches Tour on June 16, 2024. The San Joaquin Church was not our main goal but the Miag-ao church in the neighboring town and, in fact, we almost struck out this church from our itinerary due to its distance.
We came from the adjacent island of Negros and had only a limited time for a day tour. The ro-ro vessel we boarded left the BREDCO Port in Bacolod City at around 9:00AM. From Dumangas Port in Iloilo, we took a series of public utility vehicle rides and arrived in San Joaquin late at 1:21 PM.
It would be of great regret if we hadn't visited this church which is a National Cultural Treasure (National Historical Institute) and a National Historical Landmark (National Historical Commission of the Philippines). Construction of this church began in 1859 and it was completed after 10 years in 1869. It is unique in the whole country for its pediment that depicts in bas relief the Battle of Tetuan in 1861. In that battle, the Spaniards defeated the Moors (Moroccan army). Perhaps, the choice of depicting the Battle scene is for the purpose of reminding the faithful of the supremacy of Christians over the Moros from Southern Philippines, who had been pillaging the town for centuries.
In this visit, I was able to touch the coral stones hewn to fit where each belongs that reminds me of the craftsmanship long forgotten."

"San Joaquin Parish Church
San Joaquin, Iloilo Province

The construction of San Joaquin Church was completed in 1869 during the Spanish colonization era by Augustinians. The convent of the San Joaquin Church was left in ruins after the World War II leaving its noted well and kiln which were used for baking. The then National Historical Institute marked the church as a National Historical Site in 1980 pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 260 of 1973 and Presidential Decree No. 375 of 1974.

In the 1980s the church structure underwent renovations. The side and back walls and the altar area was reinforced by cement by local priest which according to heritage conservationists caused the loss of the structure's integrity and authenticity. The structure was declared a National Cultural Treasure (NCT) by the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) in 2001.The declaration also covers the convent ruins of the church complex."

Its robust stone walls, built from meticulously fitted coral stones, speak to the enduring construction methods of the era. The church's design reflects a blend of European Baroque influences with local adaptations, creating a structure that is both grand and harmoniously integrated with its environment. Reddit

Over the years, the church has undergone renovations. Despite these challenges, the church remains a significant historical landmark. Reddit
