Reviews Summary

Grohman's Gate is widely praised for its impressive neo-Gothic architecture and unique spool-shaped pillars, offering a powerful glimpse into Łódź's industrial past. While the gate itself is well-maintained and visually striking, some visitors note that the surrounding areas show signs of neglect, which can detract from the overall experience. Robert Robert

"Grohman's Barrels, a historic factory gate at 46 Targowa Street in Łódź, is a place that deserves five stars for its very presence – albeit with a touch of regret for what could have been! Built in 1896 according to the design of Franciszek Chełmiński, this neo-Gothic gem of red brick and distinctive columns shaped like spools of thread makes an incredible impression – as if you were transported back in time to industrial Łódź or standing before the majestic gate of Malbork Castle. These "barrels" are not only an architectural masterpiece but also a symbol of the power of the Grohman family, who once weaved the city's history here.

It's a shame, however, that this is essentially all that remains of such a beautiful structure – the gate stands proudly, but surrounded by the shadow of neglect, a reminder of the fragility of heritage. After its 2008 renovation, carried out by Dakri under the supervision of the Łódź Special Economic Zone, it gleamed like new, the city's calling card – it was called "Łódź's leaning tower." Today, however, the smeared walls, trash, and lack of care are a source of sadness. Perhaps it's time to stop vandalizing historical monuments? The Zone staff is doing what they can, but without significant support, it's tilting at windmills. If this continues, there won't be much left for future generations, which is a shame – because Grohman's Barrels is not just a gateway; it's a piece of Łódź's soul that can still delight. It's worth visiting to experience the magic of the past, but also to consider how to preserve it for the future!"

Dariusz Trachimowicz

"Grohman's Barrels is a colloquial term used in public spaces. The pillars of this gate are actually... thread spools, the foundations and pillars of old Łódź and its textile industry."
