Farol de Cacilhas 🇬🇧 This lighthouse was inaugurated in 1886 and permanently deactivated in 1978. It was then transported to the Azores, where it was in operation from 1986 to 2004. In 2007, it was brought back, and the ceremony for the reinstallation of the old lighthouse took place in 2009. I’ve wanted to make a paper lighthouse for a while and I got round to making one this weekend 🌊 This one is inspired by the Farol da Cacilhas lighthouse in Lisbon which I saw on @accidentallywesanderson ! so inevitably I had to add this excellent Alexandre Desplat audio 🌞 Lighthouse is made of paper, half a door knob and a bit of wire ☺️

Visitors rave about the stunning panoramic views of Lisbon from Cacilhas, especially during sunset, and the charming historical lighthouse. The easy ferry access and the abundance of riverside restaurants offering delicious food are also frequently praised. Some note the lack of safety barriers near the lighthouse, advising caution with children.

Maria Romanova

"Cacilhas lighthouse (1885) was meant to indicate the southern limit of the anchorage area on the River Tagus, an area where fog is common. It was closed in 1978, but not only because it did no longer serve a useful purpose. It was in the way of construction work for the new terminal for passenger ferries connecting Cacilhas with Lisbon. Therefore it was dismantled and, in 1980, sent to the Azores to replace the Serreta lighthouse on Terceira Island, which had been damaged by an earthquake.

It always had been a popular attraction in the Cacilhas. The Municipality of Almada asked the Directorate of Lighthouses to return it to Cacilhas. It was disassembled again in 2004 and shipped back from the Azores to Portugal. After restauration a relocation ceremony was held in 2009. It stands a few meters from its original site. The restored tower is painted red, which was its original colour although from 1935 to 1978 it had been green. It has no functional purpose anymore, it is only “decoration”. At the round foot of the lighthouse is a poem marked in concrete."
