What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Aveiro Cathedral is appreciated for its historical significance and beautiful interior, particularly its azulejo tiles and gilded altarpieces. Visitors find it a peaceful and accessible site, though some note that it's smaller than other cathedrals and may have ongoing reconstruction. Overall, it's considered a worthwhile and free stop on an Aveiro itinerary.
"The cathedral traces its origins to the Convent of São Domingos, founded in 1464 by the Dominican Order. Over the 16th and 17th centuries, it underwent significant Baroque expansions. In 1835, it was designated the parish church , and later became the cathedral (Sé) of Aveiro in 1938. Architecturally, it features a blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. Notable features include two period pipe organs and a Gothic stone cross in front of the church.
Note: The original Gothic cross is preserved inside the cathedral."

"Not from the religious point of view but as a structure of importance and historic landmark, this church history goes back to 1493. It was originally built as an ordinary church and later rebranded as a cathedral. It is on the smaller size compared to other cathedrals. Nonetheless, it should be on your list of places to visit on Aveiro."
