"Trata-se de uma das igrejas mais antigas de Beja. No local onde hoje se encontra este templo poderá ter sido construída a primitiva catedral cristã, na Antiguidade Tardia, que posteriormente deu origem, na época islâmica, à mesquita principal da cidade.
Com a ocupação definitiva da cidade pelos cristãos, no século XIII, os monarcas portugueses terão autorizado a construção de um novo templo cristão, que substituísse a mesquita.
Do edifício desta época resta a estrutura gótica da cabeceira, visível a partir do exterior. A galilé terá sido construída em finais do século XV, o corpo central na segunda metade do século XVI, e, em finais do século XVIII, foram remodeladas a capela-mor e as capelas laterais.
Destaca-se o altar da Capela de N.ª Sra. do Rosário, segundo o projecto de Manuel João da Fonseca, com uma monumental Árvore de Jesse."
