The ancient existing temple was partially destroyed. Documentary references to the Church of Santa Maria Maior appear in the Inquirições Afonsinas of 1259. The Romanesque temple was possibly built in the 12th century, on top of another of Visigothic origin. The bell tower and its portal from the medieval structure still remain."
