Reviews Summary

While the Vereda do Urzal trail boasts spectacular valley views and diverse natural beauty, its current lack of maintenance and recent fire damage present significant challenges. Hikers often find the path overgrown and obstructed by fallen trees, requiring caution and sturdy footwear. The limited phone signal adds to the need for preparedness, making it a hike best suited for experienced trekkers seeking solitude.

"The canals of Madeira Island, known locally as “levadas,” are one of the island’s most unique and captivating features, offer both historical and natural beauty. Originally built as an ingenious irrigation system to carry fresh spring water from the mountainous interior to the drier agricultural regions in the south and coastal foothills, the levadas now serve as an iconic way to experience the island.

The levadas meander through some of Madeira’s most breathtaking landscapes — think misty forests, high cliffs, dramatic valleys, and panoramic mountain views. Many trails follow the levadas closely, allowing hikers to walk alongside crystal-clear streams as they pass waterfalls, tunnels, and lush vegetation.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, there’s likely a levada walk suited for you.

Traveling along levadas immerses visitors in Madeira’s rich flora and fauna. This ancient, subtropical rainforest is home to endemic plants and birds, and the levadas are one of the best ways to explore it.

Beyond their natural beauty, the levadas tell a story of human ingenuity and resilience. Many date back to the 15th century and reflect centuries of engineering that helped transform Madeira into a productive agricultural hub. Walking a levada trail is like walking through a living museum of the island’s history.
Because levada trails often wind through remote and quiet areas, they offer a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere. The only sounds may be birdsong, the rustle of trees, and the trickle of water — a perfect escape from the modern world."

"It's a beautiful trail; however, this hike is not recommended for those with low physical fitness. Although it is a route recommended by the competent authorities, it is currently not well-maintained (parts of the trail are overgrown with vegetation, sometimes difficult to navigate, which can lead to dangerous falls —caution is needed!).

The northern part of the trail has nearly pristine vegetation, while the southern part is filled with exotic species, mainly eucalyptus. The trail is perfect for birdwatching and offers breathtaking landscapes.

However, due to the lack of proper maintenance, I do not recommend this trail and am compelled to give it only 3 stars.

Attention: part of the route has no GSM coverage, so you won’t be able to make or receive phone calls."

"Beautiful hike that goes up one of the surrounding mountains of the valley. Great view of the village. Few people take this hike, so you will have the route to yourself most of the time."
