Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Sé de Elvas Cathedral a worthwhile and free stop, particularly appreciating its unique painted ceiling and extensive polychrome tiles. While its historical significance as a former cathedral is noted, some find the interior simple beyond these highlights. The short visit time and central location make it an easy addition to an Elvas itinerary.

"Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a former Cathedral of Elvas and was built in the first half of 16th century and lost its status as a cathedral in 1881.
Its a Manueline style church but it lost its character during the years. Both side portal entrances are still clearly of Manueline style, and quite beautiful. Church inside is pretty simple, i loved the painted ceiling. The entire inside walls of the church are surrounded by polychrome tiles with lace and roses. Noteworthy is the huge organ in the upper choir. Worth to visit!"

"Opening times: opened every day, see photo for actual timings. Closed during the last weekend of every month. Occasionally closes on Sunday if there was a bank holiday during that week.
Gorgeous ceiling, never seen anything like it."

Gonçalo Lacerda-Machado

"Built between 1517 and 1537 in the Manueline style by architect Francisco de Arruda, this church was constructed on the site of an earlier Gothic church. In 1570, with the establishment of the Diocese of Elvas, it was elevated to cathedral status. Following the suppression of the diocese in 1881, it reverted to a regular parish church. During the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668), it is believed to have served as a place of prayer for the safe return of soldiers, though the exact date or context of this role remains uncertain."
