"Beautiful lake. Be there before 9 and you can drive in yourself to the parking. We were there at 8 and it was perfect."
Jasmijn
"Wonderful place! We arrived at 9 am and it was really foggy and it was drizzling . We could not see anything . Even the driver of the bus told us to try again another day. But we decided to go down. And in 15-20 minutes the fog and clouds started to fade and an incredible view appeared! It is really worth going down as well, we went approximately 1 hour towards the beach . The nature is fantastic . But the path is not so easy. So tracking shoes is must have ."

"Update
Another visit this time not from the viewpoints but directly from the trails. Just me and nature. Clouds, birds, wind, somewhere piercing blue sky and sun rays. For a few hours no one on the trail. Unforgettable landscape sceneries like from the Lord of the Rings stories and I felt like a participant in the Fellowship of the Ring. Absolutely amazing. Not all trails are available due to bird protection but the one I chose (to be honest part of the section off the trail) was really demanding and treacherous (heavy night rainfall made the ground very soft and there were a lot of landslides). The path to the lake is easy. Further on it is harder but oh so beautiful!

1st visit.
One of the places you must see. Stop and stay here for a while to feel the magic of this place. Photos or words cannot convey what you will experience while being here, standing or hiking the trails. The access road itself and the views along the way are unforgettable!"

Navigating Access: Driving vs. Shuttles
However, many visitors prefer the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of driving their own car. To do this, plan your visit for before 9 AM or after 7 PM. Arriving early not only allows you to drive but also often means encountering fewer crowds and potentially clearer weather. Checking live conditions via webcams like SpotAzores can be helpful, but remember that conditions can change rapidly within the volcanic crater.
For those who choose the shuttle, be aware that the stops can be brief, offering limited time to soak in the views. Some travelers have reported feeling rushed. If a calm, unhurried experience is a priority, aiming for the early morning or late evening drive is highly recommended.
Hiking Trails: From Easy Descent to Challenging Treks
Beyond the immediate lake access, a network of trails winds through the surrounding nature reserve. These trails can be significantly more demanding. Hikers should be prepared for treacherous terrain, especially after rainfall, which can make the ground soft and prone to landslides. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are an absolute must for these routes. Some trails may be partially closed due to bird protection, so always be mindful of signage.
Despite the challenges, exploring these trails offers an unparalleled immersion in the unique volcanic landscape. The feeling of solitude, surrounded by endemic flora and dramatic scenery, has been described as akin to stepping into a fantasy novel. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the effort is richly rewarded with unforgettable views and a deep connection to nature.
The Volatile Beauty of Azorean Weather
Visitors are advised to be patient and not discouraged by initial fog. Many accounts highlight how quickly the clouds can dissipate, unveiling the stunning blue of the lake and the surrounding green slopes. This phenomenon makes it worthwhile to wait or even consider a second visit if the weather is uncooperative on your first attempt.
Layering clothing is essential, as temperatures can fluctuate significantly. Even on a sunny day, the wind within the crater can make it feel cooler. Being prepared for rain, wind, and sun all within a short period is key to a comfortable and enjoyable visit to this spectacular natural wonder.
